The temperature took a noticeable sudden nosedive early afternoon, but I see that the forecast updated 20 mins ago is showing temps slightly higher overnight and tomorrow morning than thought a few hours ago. The bits have been taken out of the rain shower indications as well, but the increase in wind will make things unpleasant whether rain, sleet or dry. I will need to get out before lunch by the looks of things - but of course it might have changed again by then.

It was sleeting heavily at 4.30 this morning when I peered out - heavy rain with about 20% large blobs of snow in the mix, at 2 degrees C. Now the cloud's breaking but with noticeable convection from cumulus puffing up through the gaps as winds backing NW bring showers down from the Irish Sea. If we get any of these, with temperatures not exceeding 4C down here, I am expecting a mixture of moderate rain, small hail and snow. DracoM will probably see a fair bit of snow.

The morning wasn't too bad but turned nasty after lunch. The wind increased and wetness of various sorts appeared - sleet when I went into Lidl had turned to snow briefly when I came out and had to go across to Tesco. I was glad time constraints meant I had taken the car, although annoying that issues arising unexpectedly meant I couldn't take advantage of the better weather to use the bus in the morning instead - hourly buses do make for a certain level of inflexibility! By the time I had to walk into town for a meeting at 4 the wetness had just about stopped, but the windchill was kicking in with a vengeance - my face felt raw as if it had been rubbed with sandpaper. Ice was beginning to form by the time I got home - having done a slight detour to pick up chips for tea as I felt the need for instance warm stodge and calories. With temps due to get down to -4 (without windchill) tomorrow is going to be icy - just as well the wind today, before and after the "rain", did a good job of drying up much of the wetness. Glad I don't have to use the car or even go out if it looks too bad underfoot.Comment

As expected a very cold night, -4.5 in the woodstore beside the house. I turned the CH thermostat down to 12 but it still came on several times during the night, not such a bad thing as it turned out because I was having one of my bad nights and had to get up at 4am so having a warm living room was welcome. This morning no wind and a typical pretty winter dawn - palest pink wash across the eastern sky merging into palest blue with a few artfully disposed streaks of white cloud. Due to have plenty of sun all day so getting out no problem so long as wrapped up warm. At least that's easier without the wind shoving its icy fingers into all the tiny clothing gaps. It'll have to be pavement tramping as the ground on the green spaces is horribly churned up after all the rain and will have frozen to real ankle turning stuff. Walking on pavement may irritate my back but better that than a damaged ankle or worse.Comment

Still zero Celsius at midday following a nighttime minimum of minus 5, and would likely be higher were it not for a veil of thick cirrostratus of high altostratus spreading up from the south. Fortunately it appears to be dead calm, so my walk to the shops after lunch should not be too uncomfortable in overcoat, woolen scarf and bobble hat.Comment

A niggly breeze got up at midday, but the sunshine made it good to be out anyway, if a bit difficult to see sometimes! The marketplace, which is the centre of town, runs into the High Street, and is aligned N-S so round the middle of the day the sun shines directly through. When it's low in the sky as today it means that going in one direction tends to be travelling blind - difficult to make out faces, so greetings can get a bit fractured as one squints to see who has spoken and to whom. Fortunately when the decision was made that the High Street should be one way it had to go from S to N.
I don't think much if any actual gardening will be done tomorrow on my weekly volunteer slot. It should be dry and temps marginally up on today, but the ground will still be frozen. I can sort out what needs doing over the next few weeks in my patches though and also check on the geranium plants that were brought under cover in the autumn. They are on the windowsill of the brick gardeners' shed which is unheated. They survived the last cold snap,there are buildings (although also unheated) attached to each side and the back, and it gets the sun for much of the day, so it should be OK.Comment

A degree up last night on the previous - and 2 C higher this afternoon - somewhat mitigated by a slight breeze getting up that wasn't there yesterday, but nice dry cold, and so not penetratingComment
