Total thaw leaves everything in a muddy, foggy, deep, dank chill.

Temperature no higher than + 3C here today, despite bright sunshine. Lack of any kind of breeze made for a pleasant 3-mile walk this afternoon, however. I'm getting into calculating the duration of my various circular walks, so as to be home in time for the start of Jazz on 3 on Sunday afternoons!
No rain appears to be on the agenda almost everywhere for the next week, which should see temperatures back to around the averages for late January. Next month the daytime maxima begin to inch up - one degree from the middle of the month. Something then to look forward to, assuming the unlikelihood of seasonal compliance!

Well the good news is that the freezing fog doesn't seem to have turned up although it was misty, and this morning is clear blue sky(apart from the contrails) with sun very much in evidence now so the remnants of haze should clear soon. But the temperature - ouch! The sheltered woodstore recording -6.3 overnight and the Met Office showing -8 as the minimum at 5 am - no figures for the next couple of hours as yet. It would explain why the CH boiler was active overnight, although the thermostat was down to 12 to try and forestall that. Looks as if the vague thoughts of external insulation on the two outside walls of the single storey extension (80's build and insulation already in the walls, hah!) may need to become less vague - but the recent roof renovations made a big hole in the budget, and the windows and back door need replacing - wretched plastic DG reaching/reached the end of its life.

The past couple of days have not been pleasant - Wednesday was particularly nasty for dark, dank perishing cold, despite the temperature getting above zero, and most folk out and about were saying they preferred the previous cold as it came with sun and dry conditions. Thursday was a bit of an improvement thank heavens but it's only today that things actually seem better for having lost the frost; dry, with bright sun offsetting a niggly cold fairly noticeable breeze - good day for drying washing, which I've taken advantage of.
