Became quite unpleasant this afternoon with the temperature getting to around 27 and the wind not only very strong but also hot (not just warm) an unwelcome reminder of the similar wind which exacerbated the heat and did so much damage on 19th July. The wind has dropped a bit but it's still around 24 degrees outside so a sticky night ahead.

More of the same tomorrow. It was good while it lasted to have a bit of a break from the never ending watering... I have drastically reduced the plants getting such attention (5 new fruit trees, some veg and about 6 containers of decorative - permanent not annual - planting and 3 of salad and tender veg - which would have been in the ground in other years), but the conditions have been such that just pottering round with a watering can of an evening doesn't suffice - especially when a mole is excavating underneath and blackbirds on top.
Rather cloudy today, with acceptable temperatures. With max 25C! Sounds like it’s going to be a muggy day,Don’t cry for me

Going to be a hottie today, at 25C!
A friend of mine was saying, whose from Australia, said that, in our last heat wave, that we should shut all windows, close curtains and have a bowl of water by the fan, so it produces cool air.Don’t cry for me

Distinctly cool at the beginning of the morning, the sun breaking through took the edge off and overall it has been pleasant (20 or 21) but the breeze remains chilly so shady spots mean short sleeves are a bit goosebumpy. The forecast suggests the overnight temperature is likely to be quite low compared with what we have had for weeks now, just about getting into double digits.
What hasn't changed is lack of rain... With water companies now starting to impose hosepipe bans I'll need to make sure my water butts at the bottom of the garden are topped up in case we get one here, so I can fill watering cans for those veg plants that still survive, and the new fruit trees - and hope rain comes before they empty!

I figured the 25C officially predicted for London to be excessive, it only reaching 18C by 12 noon, and this has proved to be the case, with a maximum here of 22C, which turned out ideal for a 16-mile round trip, one I frequently cycle, with the Hope Café stop off for the sugariest slab of chocolate brownie studded with walnuts and a huge beaker of tea - £5.05 in all, but she let me off the 5p as there was no change in the float! Had a nice chat with a couple of around my age on a London visit from Hereford to see their son, who's resident in Lewisham. There was a nice relaxed feel in the parks, the usual couples, family groups, dogs, wheelchair users, but the fact that the council (Lewisham) had at some point given all grass areas a No 1 cut meant not one blade of green grass to be seen anywhere.
If I'm to do any more long rides this week they'll have to be before it hots up once more, which is expected later in the coming week.
