Showing as -2.5 overnight which is an improvement on the -4.5 of the previous nights, but the difference isn't immediately apparent as there was very limited melting of existing ice on previous days. Emptying the main birdbath (metal dustbin lid on top of a large plantpot) this morning proved interesting. During the freeze I've been putting out water in smaller containers on the patio which are easier to keep filled, but I noticed a robin trying to use the metal one so went out with a kettle of hot water. It had been full to the brim after the rain, which after "normal" frosts wouldn't have frozen to any great depth, especially if there was any daytime sun as it's protected by a hedge at its back and faces south, but was now frozen solid - several inches of ice not wanting to come out. Did eventually get it (mostly) out and hope the robin and other birds find and use it. The forecasts for the days ahead suggest I'll need to repeat the exercise each day, as well as continuing with the smaller drinking water provision.
Plenty of sun currently but there is talk of wintery showers in the afternoon - just when I have to walk into town for an eye test.

        Indeed!

-2C this morning and freezing fog! Yuk! I think the sun is trying to push through, though.

We have that strange light in the sky - YES sun, and it is cloudless, and wow! is it cold or what! -5C.
South-facing windows will get low, warm sun much of the day. Yipee!

+2°C, blue skies, sun and rather atmospheric mist here.

Snow, apparently, on the moors: https://www.yorkpress.co.uk/news/232...rth-yorkshire/

But, Grumpyyungun (no relation) disagrees (see comments).

Very foggy and frosty on my walk 10-11 this morning. Fog is gradually clearing but it was spooky not being able to see across the lake. Lack of sun, compared with previous days, makes for quite chilly temperature, but there is no wind so it's not too bad if you're walking.

Today started off clear skies and bright sunshine but murky fog has now descended. It's created a weird diffuse light.
                Best regards,

Sun still struggling to get through here.

Opera North Tosca for us tonight: taking the bus (free!) rather than driving in this weather.

Clear and sunny from the off and as there's no breeze it's possible to feel the sun's warmth. What wasn't so good was finding that despite the higher temperatures quite a lot of pavements had an near invisible ice glaze. Fortunately I realised in time to avoid harm, but had to choose my path carefully, walking in the road in a couple of places where there was no ice-free part of the footpath.

Hoar frost on pavements was also present hereabouts for my afternoon walk, making for considerable slipperiness, although the most frosty surfaces gave enough warning with their whiteness. Considerable hoar frost on grass and shrubs too, indicating how close the general air temperature came to the dewpoint last night: - 2C, rising to 3.5, but feeling less raw than yesterday, the air being drier.

Serious mist/fog hereabouts on the West side of the Hambleton Hills. Very variable though, with areas of relative clarity (in the headlights) alternating with areas of relative density. Temp -2°C according to car thermometer.

We had a right pea soup er yesterday, down here. The sun melted it away though, thankfully. Today, earlier on it was -3C, during the night, I heard it was -7C! It’s bright & sunny now, with quite a frost.

Early morning temperature of -7C here and it still feels very cold. Heating is well on which means another likely £10 to £12 usage, the daily average now.

Some excellent archetypal wintery scenes hereabouts with the frost still on the trees for my walk (sadly I didn't bring my phone with me). It feels very cold in our house though - as though the cold has accumulated, and it doesn't help that there are no radiators upstairs and my bedroom being above the garage...
