    Gilbert's Glory . R4 3.45pm every afternoon this week.

For those of us who enjoy G & S, a daily programme this week

Poet Ruth Padel explores five aspects of the work of W.S. Gilbert to mark the centenary of his death and evaluate his lasting legacy.

one gone, 4 to go, 15 mins per programme

Thank you salymap for flagging this up, I've caught up with the first programme on iplayer, extremely interesting, looking forward to the second one as it's about his use of language. I know little of Gilbert (or indeed Sullivan) and only own one cd Patience which I think is marvellous. I think there are a few G&S fans on the message board.

Thanks Anna, yes he certainly had a rather topsy-turvy life. I always thought him a career barrister, glad he was a failure and turned to writing.

I've seen most of the operas and love them, but not things to see too often.
