Building your own ideal BaL recording in a world of streaming

Listening to the BaL on Mahler's Second Symphony (wasn't William Mival an excellent guide!), I was struck by his repeated comments of how this or that conductor gets a particular movement absolutely right (e.g. Walter/NYP/Maureen Forrester in 'Urlicht'). It seems to me that, in an age of streaming and playlists, you could very easily concoct a sort of ideal BaL recording from many different records, if need be. Does anyone ever do this, or does it go against the grain of what a BaL should be - 1 conductor, 1 orchestra, 1 recording? It would seem that if, as Mival suggested, you can see the overarching 'vision' of a conductor in the performance of a work, you would need to hear it in its entirety to appreciate that 'vision'. However, I know that I go to certain recordings when streaming for certain movements and no more.

      .

... well, January 2018 does indeed mark the 200th anniversary of the publication of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus .

I can see the idea might be worth a try - but at the moment I have enough trouble (feeling I have time to spare) finding (CD) and choosing (including downloads/streaming) one recording and playing that. So for the moment, BAL, plus comments here or music web and try one version at a time.

I use Naxos Music Library and Google Play music - both are good services. But I understand on Spotify its possible to swop playlists? If so, and anyone has any assemblages to offer, I might give it a try via my daughter's subscription.

I used to play little games like this as a teenager, concocting the ideal performance. It never really worked.

I even tried to put together the super Tchaikovsky Symphony: It might have been 5(i), Manfred (ii), 6 (iii) and 5 (iv). Even worse!!

Yes, apart from everything else, the key changes would be excruciating.........

Back in the early '80s, Richard Osborne suggested on a BaL that his ideal Bruckner #6 would have Klemperer for the two outer Movements and Barenboim (Chicago) for the two inner.
