Perhaps that individual has tried to join this Forum in the past only to find that his or her desired user name has been STOLEN by an existing member here...?

Could you adopt the English version of your user name?

I did try that, but it was taken. I settled for an abbreviation.

I am very sorry to hear that you have been pressured into join this twittering thing. I sincerely hope that you and Lucy are not expected to utter things like someone has just texted to say … from time to time during the Early Music Show. If that ever happens, that will be the Black Weekend for us.

I've just been out to lunch at the local tratt. Being Italians, of course, they have classical music on in the background - Classic FM, slightly too loud. So I know all about the live messages coming in, the emails, the texts, the little snatches of recorded requests. ('Hello, I'm Wendy and I live in Pershore. I would like to hear ...').
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

                Dear Doversoul,

You may remember the early days of the EMS, when there was a monthly live show from Manchester (Oxford Road). Texting was the thing back then, and the soliciting of opinions from "you out there". That idea soon faded away.....but there's no stopping Twitter now. As almost all editions of the programme are pre-recorded, there is absolutely no danger of the "Mrs Trellis has just tweeted to say" syndrome, and the idea hasn't yet been mooted for the three or four live shows that take place each year, so it's safe to go on listening!

As soon as I signed up for the first time yesterday, I was presented with my daughter's tweets. Can this utter drivel be written by her? And how did the Twitter bosses know we were related. She signed up long after leaving home.

                      Dear Catherine

Many, many thanks for your reassuring words. Long may live Early Music Show uninvaded by Mrs Trellis & Co.

Reference to Oxford Rd, Manchester - I walked past what remains of the BBC building today - 3/4 gone, rubble and building dust everywhere. Studio 7 a thing of the past.

I'd just like to point out that Mrs Trellis is a regular contributor (by traditional mail) to the correspondence column of "Lute News", the Lute Society's periodical. There's a delightful contribution from her in no. 95, October 2010, about finger marks on lute soundboards, and what they tell us about our lute playing forbears (there being as you know considerable debate about right hand position and technique). In her case, her lute was damaged by her husband Len dancing too vigorously to "My Lady Hunsdon's Puffe" and knocking over her music stand, punching a hole in the rosette and breaking a string. In no 90, August 2009, she refers to an entry in "The Inventory of King Henry Vlll, The Transcript" (Society of Antiquaries, 1988) containing a description of what can only have been Henry's CD player, presumably a gift from Leonardo da Vinci via Francis 1.

If Mrs Trellis has a Twitter account, she's keeping it quiet in Lute News.

They probably don't listen to CDs, Radio 3, or post messages here!

I feel sad and I've never been to Manchester. A lot of good programmes came from there though.
