Good news. I'm not sure that I knew that she had had an aneurysm although I knew she had had psychological illness. I happened to be watching a re-run of a programme on BBC4 yesterday about a wide range of performers becoming old (a common and perhaps rather sinister 21st Century media theme) and there were the two versions by Joni of "Both Sides Now". The commentary was to the effect that it was only when she recorded the song several decades later that she realised the meaning of the words she had written. Again a perhaps, I think, but both versions really stood out in their ability to move emotionally. Talking about age, I was leaving the local farm shop the weekend before last with a bag of sausages and a pork chop in my hand and in walked Judi Dench, 81. Very brisk in the stride but no obvious sign of her recent tattoo. My father said "well hello, nice to see you" and she was very pleasant in the brief response. Alas, there wasn't enough time for my mother to tell her how her late husband had once apologised to her for his dog being in her way.

When I was looking for some photos of her out and about again I came across this article from the Guardian a couple of years ago which argues that her run of 5 LPs - Blue, For the Roses, Court and Spark, Hissing of Summer Lawns and Hejira - are unmatched by any artist. The fact that they are bookended by 'Ladies of the Canyon' and 'Don Juan's Reckless Daughter' adds even more strength to the claim for me.

Yes indeed John. I became persuaded in the early 2000s although I could when pushed try to find other examples. I have a new GP He is very much a public-private partnership, I feel, as they all are now and while he does what he is required to do no amount of words from me will provide any sort of connection. I rather like his command to be my own boss but that inevitably requires collaboration with a mainly benign force and that is either very obvious or it is not, yes? Given all of the current emphasis on Wales, including internationally, maybe it is time for it to be included properly on the Union Jack.

Mr Sherratt and I exchange tweets from time to time, most recently re the Alan Lomax BBC shows with Max, who sounds as if he is going to try and find them... I notice it's 5 years since this thread kicked off...don't the years just fly by. Today Joni reaches 75. I believe there's a big gala concert in tribute to her in LA today. Wonder if we'll catch a glimpse of the great one. Wonder if we'll ever hear any more from her. Happy Birthday Joni. Here's one of those songs and moments that made me fall in love with her all those years ago.

Great songs, great lyrics which tell a story, lovely voice. From ‘Song to a Seagull’ through to ‘Shine’ what a discography. Lesser artistes feel the need to reinvent where Joni just evolved! Haven’t looked yet but I wonder if the birthday concerts will emerge online? There’s really no point in trying to imitate JM, the best of her records are unimproveable. That said, remasters of the great run of Court and Spark/Hissing/Hejira would be great. I think she remastered of a sort those tracks that she put on the anthology a few years ago, and also there are Japanese remasters of a sort. Anyone know more?
And have any forumites tried to replicate her famous guitar tunings? I’ve never found the time or the patience tbh. To say nothing of a lack of talent ofc.Comment

Takes me back to the time when one hoped what my area of Western youth learned from eastern spiritualities - before the term "appropriation" - would tie in with our revitalised take on radical socialism.
