Why are so many folk musicians left handed? 2 guitars, that large (?) mandolin, even a flute? The house band excellent as ever, but I wasn't inspired by the US singers. One of the players a dead ringer for Michael Mansfield QC.

What a delight yesterday evening's TS was - John Doyle singing the incredibly sad tale of forced clearance 'Liberty's Sweet Shore', Ewan McLennan giving us his take on the Chilean Mine Rescue 'Whistling the Esperanza'. The show finished with a fine set of accompanied bagpipe tunes from Allan MacDonald...and also in there Cara Dillon who I think often sounds at her best with the Transatlantic set up. But highlight of the evening, the wonderful Julie Fowlis in great company with a fine Gaelic song which you'll have to watch the show to find the name of. Great show.
Jerry Douglas and Aly Bain are joined by John Doyle and Allan MacDonald.

Just caught up with it - I particularly loved the pipes (I'm a sucker for proper bagpipes) with the Highland backdrop. And Julie Fowlis.

To my ear there was something ever so slightly derivative about the Esperanza song - I kept thinking of the Pogues, and "The Band played Waltzing Matilda" - probably just me.

If the playlist for last Friday's World on 3 was up yet, Richard, I'd point you towards the excellent Allan MacDonald pipe pieces that Mary Ann played in the show, but no sign yet - and now you mention it, the Esperanza song does have some influences of Eric Bogle who wrote Matilda and No Man's Land (Green Fields of France) among other great tunes.
I do like Julie Fowlis and I recalled this song that she sang as a backdrop for a BBC Alba Hebridean wildlife series.

I went to hear Capercaillie in Perth yesterday evening. It was an excellent performance. Karen Matheson was in fine voice, and the rest of the band played admirably. They're heading south - catch them if they're coming near you.

You're not wrong, 8th...here's one of my favourites from the series. Karen Matheson singing the very moving 'Crucán Na bPáiste'.

                Gets me every time!
