Synopsis:
'The year is 2011, and a man is confronted with the stunning realization that his life is a manufactured fantasy world...'
Made (poorly) into a film called Total Recall in which Arnold Schwarzenthingy played the character known as 'Lat1'...
(I've skipped the bits about the mind-bending nightmarish reality of the Martian mining colony filled with rebellious mutants [although you have mentioned that in one or two of your posts] - and the terrorizing dictator, who can alter reality to suit his whims...although now I come to think of it, it is all starting to fit together a little too well.
Ahh well, on with the music - I've started listening to Mr. L, he did play the obligatory F.E.P.T.F.T.60's* so lost 3 points.

Interesting.
As a rule of thumb, all of the most unlikely points - I chatted with Harold Macmillan on an empty beach in Pembrokeshire, was at Kirsty MacColl's funeral, danced on a stage next to Billy Bragg and the Nicaraguan Minister of Culture, now live next door to Victoria Beckham's songwriter etc - these are all true.
The more believable ones - I'm having a different world soup each day, she only buys one sausage etc - these might need to be taken with a pinch of salt as they could be there for humour value.
Overall, it is increasingly my view that this forum is a gentle oasis in the middle of everyone else's fantasy worlds and that those are becoming more nightmarish. Perhaps this is the discussion, GT, that we should be having with last week's team on "The Verb" which is presented by the excellent Ian McMillan and goes out on Fridays at 9.15pm on Radio 3.
I guess I ought to dip into the Luscombe programme to get back on track. I've been wading through the penultimate list of last year's releases and re-releases, hence some slightly challenging entries for everyone on The Chain, not all highly recommended. The last bunch I listened to were all by quite well known indie names and truly awful so they might not make it on to The Chain at all.Last edited by Guest; 16-02-11, 19:53.

JC, I'm not saying it wasn't a genuine new year's resolution. That one in your picture. It looks fantastic. It might be on again.
And there's always a big element of truth in my witterings. She is frugal and I've seen her serving one pizza to 40 people so she probably does buy just one sausage each week.

Love it. That's a really nice memory. I now have a few conclusions about the 2010 albums in general:
- My starting points were Beach House and Azure Ray as well as a bit of standard Americana. On the first two, I feel that we are talking Fleetwood "Synth" Mac but what I like about them - actually I was a bit harsh on FM before - is that they are quite pared down, unfussy, strong if also delicate. No real bombast there in the arrangements and I thought "thank goodness, it is about time". It looked like a new trend. Then I listened to tens of other albums and the over-production in the arrangements is absolutely ridiculous. I think Arcade Fire here - their throw-in-everything-but-the-kitchen-sink approach is truly thrilling but it just doesn't work for the majority of bands. The songs and voices aren't up to it.
- While this is a sign of the times, I think it also reflects some changes in my listening habits. While it reflects earlier preferences, I am sure that all of the folk and old soul and reggae and jazz and, dare I say it, country - as well as a much wider taking in of world music - all on the radio and on Spotify, has reinforced a liking of roots-based music. It sits more centrally now in my music frame. How pretentious. Anyway, I've learnt a lot from you all and enjoyed it so thanks. May it continue.
- Having for years believed staunchly in the concept of "the difficult third album", I am now in little doubt that it is "the sophomore jinx" that is the bigger problem. Some of the quite promising first albums have been followed up by a second course that is almost stomach-churningly bad. Step forward Yeasayer, Vampire Weekend, Cherry Ghost, The Go-Team etc. As for the fourth, fifth or sixth albums by The National, Band of Horses, The Hold Steady, Caribou, Spoon, Crowded House and so on, ignore the rave reviews and don't even go there.
Very much looking forward to Andy and Lucy again on Thursday.Last edited by Guest; 16-02-11, 22:30.

Meanwhile back to last night's Luscombe:
23 minutes into it, and about 50% of it was sort-of-alright.
Uphill struggle NL, uphill struggle.
and, just to show I pay attention, the lstings says
'Timings are shown from the start of the programme in hours and minutes.'
Oh no they aren't. In the old days someone would spot this and correct it. Now I guess we have to work it out ourselves and email them...
I was wondering if we could have a caption competition...
'Nick - I managed to listen to 23 minutes of your show. Is this a record?'

I'm now looking forward to this week's episodes.
Maybe he can do it again....
Maybe he is the new MR.
I'm partial to his own amateur recordings - only because I've got some too. Late night Frogs near Marrakesh (in the King's grounds) being one of my personal favourites...don't know how I can ever share it though. And we did get chased out of the grounds by armed soldiers, but that's not on the recording.
(Paul - I tried the WFMU programme, lasted about 15 mins - prefer the playlist to the programme!)

It's like biting lemons.
I love lemons
And I heard Jolie.
She still slightly unnerves me !
But she is an artist.

Coming up on the rails to join the most feared things to hear on BBC radio - '...and now Midweek with Libby Purves' and '...now over to Moneybox Live with Vincent Duggleby' I would suggest,
'...and now this month's specially recorded studio collaboration for Late Junction'. I'm sure it's not Nick's fault - I was enjoying things up till then.
