    Folk it

Lovely films for when there's nothing on the telly.

Yes, those are very appealing. Thank you. I am going to the Shakers first as I have always been fascinated by them. Then it is onto the cajun and bluegrass and all of the other ones.

The top-tipster for the site, Doug Schulkind, strongly recommends the Sarah Ogan Gunning, btw.

C4, when that was a half-decent broadcaster in the early 80's , showed Les Blank's ' Dry Wood ' Probably at 2am but at least they did
      broadcast it !

              Surely a premature announcement!

I enjoyed the film about the Shakers. Their music has a special quality - and I rather liked one of the women's memories of a comment from an earlier member. On noting that four cars had gone down the road in one day - "Where is it all going to end?"

Lat, have to say that in my teens this was a real favourite of mine. Think it was on Judy's 'Whales and Nightingales' - loved that record.
This is a praise hymn in 4-part chorale style based on the American Traditional Shaker melody with the text an adaptation of Psalm 145. The Shaker Melody is ...

John, excellent, and thanks. It is one of my favourite songs of all time and I own a copy of that Judy Collins' compilation on CD. A version is on a Copland CD I have too and then there is the version on vinyl. That one features Lateralthinking1 live at the Fairfield Hall, Croydon, along with several hundred other 11 year olds in a choir. Understandably, they never let him be on record again.

Meant to give a nudge too, Global - the Dominic Behan song was great and the Dubliners' doing McAlpine's Fusiliers outstanding.

The Big Yin was on with Radcliffe this week talking about a film about Bert Jansch which is touring in the next couple of weeks - sounds great! Terrific Blackwaterside with Anne Briggs and wonderful track with Brownie McGee on the show. Looks worth watching out for if it's in the neighbourhood.
Mark presents an hour of the best folk and acoustic music, with guest Billy Connolly.

Here's a bit info about the film.
