    Excellent JC & Lat.
Just spent a pleasant hour listening to her work that's available on Spotify. Not enough.

    More gayageums needed I think.

Global, I mentioned elsewhere that there was a fine track that Max played a couple of weeks ago with Kyungso Park and Andy Shepherd...it was this show -
Max Reinhardt with afro-funk, French noise, Indian classical traditions and medieval music

Max was fair taken by it. I liked it too.

By the way, that Diabel Cissokho was very good indeed on this morning's Cerys.

I have only just attempted to access this session and have missed it by a few days.

The programmes seem to be available for just one month.

I see that she featured this track in the last programme. While it could have been more inventive, respect perhaps for the Syrian musicians appears to have brought out the strongest voice in Paul Weller for years. Set for release tomorrow, the progress of this album will be interesting to watch. It looks like it is going to be a commercial success:

Cerys had Bettany Hughes in this morning talking Istanbul (Book out), and there are some very fine Turkish tunes in there today...and the yucky Four Lads...oh well.

Cerys Matthews has her show from the City of Culture's Poetry festival and she's got Lat faves, the Unthanks, in for a live session.

Worth it, Lat. They were doing the Molly Drake poems...enjoyed it.

By the way, did you notice that another fave of yours, Jimmy Webb, was on Later last night. Haven't seen it yet - have to watch on I-player so I can fast forward through the inevitable dross. I'm not sure if Jimmy is singing or chatting about Glen Campbell.

He was also interviewed on Radio Cornwall on Friday, I think phone-link. I think he's doing the rounds plugging a book. I was hoping he would be asked about the meaning of the lyrics of MacArthur Park - great song musically, but what's it mean?

Quote: "It's just a song about a girlfriend of mine, Susie Horton, and this place on Wilshire Boulevard where we used to have lunch, which is called MacArthur Park. And the truth is that everything in the song was visible. There's nothing in it that's fabricated. The old men playing checkers by the trees, the cake that was left out in the rain ......... all of the things that are talked about in the song are things I actually saw. And so it's a kind of musical collage of this whole love affair that kind of went down in MacArthur('s? - editor) Park".

That's his main version when pressed. There are others. Mainly he doesn't want to talk about it. Have you noticed how these people always have a Susie early rather than late in their lives? Personally, I view it as a testament to the way in which I peaked at the age of three and was required to go downhill. He wrote it when I was four and while officially we've never met, I am in little doubt that it was conveyed on the vibe. By rights, I should have 50% of what he's made from it. And in a sense I do via my pleasure from its sound.

Thanks lat - it's a great song, singing it is more difficult unless you are a good top tenor as Top Eb is the summit in the original.

I've just quietly hummed it - I reckon I could do the range but starting ludicrously low (almost Lee Marvin) and continuing with it very, very badly.

Is there a world music version?

Yes the range is such 2 octaves plus 1/3 - I could do it just transposing down the original by 1/5. F to Ab.
Presumably his Susie is the same one in Where's the Playground....'
