    Reggae

    Any experts out there?
I am looking for some suggestions/shortcuts. Feeling idle as ever....

I am interested in 70's /80's . Don't know much apart from the obvious, looking for stuff on the heavier side of Marley/Black Uhuru.

Not much to go on but a few choice thoughts would be welcome.
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

Erm, teamsaint, I am not an expert in anything. Have never wanted to be. Too much of a dabbler.

I don't know how much you know. I also tend to go for a sweeter sound in general - Burning Spear, Misty in Roots, Steel Pulse, The Abyssinians etc from that era - so I may not be best placed. However, I do also like dub etc. You could try some of these :

    Augustus Pablo - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fanxnVtLg4g
    Dennis Alcapone - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQbOr...eature=related
    U-Roy - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uds2J...eature=related

    Dillinger - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ec4za7mqUU4
    Leroy Smart and I-Roy - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JNypvbqZ0I
    Niney the Observer - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ysJO2mkKCE

(and this was no.1 in Britain in 1971 : it still sounds good to me - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_7Kx2FlFQY)

Augustus Pablo, ts, as Lat said - I used to have a bit of vinyl, 'Original Rockers' I think it was called - wonderful.

I love Toots and the Maytals - for me Toots has one of the fine voices of the world. I've already said elsewhere that I spent one drunken night with my pal, back in the days of vinyl, trying to work out the lyrics of this one.

Just deleted a long and fascinating reply !!
Anyway, cheers people...making up for the lost years...must have heard, but not really listened to, a thousand reggae tunes on Peel's show.....a Wiltshire bedroom and a transistor radio isn't the natural home of dub !!
Will report back on your suggestions, and keep them coming . Broadband back to speed, youtube here i come !

        Football...whats that ?!
        (got tickets for Saturday ...)

There was an excellent thread three years ago on the old Radio 2 message board, which covered a wide range of different tastes and styles:

The best of the BBC, with the latest news and sport headlines, weather, TV & radio highlights and much more from across the whole of BBC Online

Btw, some of the old-style Youtube links in the thread are now defunct, but artist and track are usually searchable to obtain the new references.

There's Horace Andy of course, he of the Massive Attack collaborations, but with a large back-catalogue before that...
