That clip was one of the funniest things I'd seen in a long time. I'm going to see if I can find the whole film.

ah in the good old days we all turfed off to the Academy in Oxford Street or the Curzon [where one gazed as poor students at the Mirabelle and wondered quite what the sole meuniere was like]; must say i found the Bourgeoisie bit of a drag at the time, but on the other hand this was much more gripping:

Go see any you can Lat - He always gave you something different. I absolutely love this one - such memorable images - and of course it has the wonderful Fernando Rey.

Was he there? I didn't notice him. Good job we are after the watershed.

I was given prunes in porridge once in a B and B at Culloden. I'd been getting lessons at the Highland Games in Nairn from Donald E Campbell on how to toss the caber. He wasn't very impressed by my weetabix regime and felt it was the best way forward.

Uh.hh! You talkin' to me ? I happen to be half a century plus. Tho from some of my contributions here you may find them; childlike ?

When I first saw the film -The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoise- at the Jean Cocteau theatre in Santa Fe, I could not even relate to what a "class system" was let alone what little I knew of the caste system in India. The doctoral students from India that my dad oversaw at university taught me this, but I recall most vividly the sandalwood soap they gave me. Their "incense" which was such a strange idea to me, as we would frequently eat with them. And I was so confused as to how a cow could be sacred, that I could never ask a question as to How a Cow, Holy ? My uncles were all ranchers in Wyoming but a Holy cow.

O! I see where you get the idea "not for children aka C Da J".

Sigolene, That is an extraordinary set of images in one short paragraph. Not all students in Britain eat sole meuniere. We used to return from nights out via Jimmy's Cafe. Fish, chips, mushy peas and a meat and potato pie with or without scrappings. Lat.

Is the Curzon now the one in a modern building you go up to in a lift? If so, I saw Buena Vista Social Club there.

i gave up on Mayfair in the 60s Lateral ..... and discovered a Paraguayan Restaurant in Knightsbridge in the later 70s, best live music in the city if you like that kind of thing, saw Trio Los Paraguayas after one of their stage shows came in and sang, they could make the earth move in a room that size, over time all the South American musos in London turned up there and played .... just played the quiet gringo, sat in a corner ordering brandies ...... oh it was heaven and i was in love etc etc .... shame about her in the end but that place was magic ...

the most popular ones in Paraguay would probably be Empanads de carne (beef), pollo (chicken), choclo (corn), or jamón y queso (ham and cheese). My favorite would be the beef and tah-dah, here it is!

                            EMPANADA DOUGH:

                            1. Mix together the Flour + Salt + Baking Powder.
                            2. Cut in the Lard and pinch it with your fingers until it resembles coarse crumbs (like making a pie).
                            3. Add in warm water until it the dough comes together.
                            4. Knead until it forms a smooth ball.
                            5. Cut the dough into 12 pieces.
                            6. Roll the individual pieces out and cut into 12cm circles.
                            7. Make more with leftover dough.

                            EMPANADA DE CARNE:

                            1. Cook the ground beef with onions, green pepper, and garlic.
                            2. Add Parsley + Cumin (i use a lot of both...especially Cumin!)
                            3. Season with Salt + Pepper.
                            4. When done, chop the eggs and gently mix it into the meat .
                            5. Spoon the meat mixture onto the dough and fold it up. Press down the edges with a fork.
                            6. Deep fry until golden brown or bake them. (when baking, brush the top with eggs.)
According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

Calum, very helpful. Best to do the recipes at this time when GT is asleep. I print them off, then we discretely remove em corrupt government stylee, before he has his Shredded Wheat. 6.45am according to my mates in the overhead helicopter.

Sigolene, yes we do much the same in Surrey, I still import mushy peas in a can from Yorkshire. There's a checkpoint at Watford but they generally get through on the nod. There's not a lot of call for ranchers in this area but there is - I kid you not - a volunteering job being advertised for counting sheep at a local farm. I quite like the sound of it. Have a holy night tonight and pleasant dreams.
