    Mercedes Peon

Blimey. Perhaps this artist shouldn't be new to me but I was having a look at the Songlines or Folk Roots site earlier today and was led to these clips. Not quite sure what to make of her. She seems to veer from experimental to folk to pop. Very unusual though. I think I like the overall sound and would imagine it to be good live. (Apologies for the wobbly quality of the first clip).

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

Well worth spotting I think Lat.

    From 2008
Mary presents the programme from the Celtic Connections Festival in Glasgow, with studio performances from Daimh and singer Jenna Cumming, plus highlights from the Galician Night at Glasgow's Old Fruitmarket.

Interesting. I have been to Galicia and find it an interesting area geographically and culturally. Much as I like Spanish guitars, flamenco, and so on, there is a lot more to the country musically. Having discovered Acetre from Extremadura decades after their formation, I have some thoughts about exploring the music of Spain. It does seem to produce unusual voices and arrangements.

A fascinating part of Spain. Interesting language, magnificent scenery.

I hadn't heard of this lass, but I'm glad I have now. I like clip 2 especially. Thanks Lat.

Simon, I am pleased that you liked it. Unfortunately, the sound quality of some of the Spanish clips isn't great. This one isn't as clear as it might be and it isn't to everyone's taste. I love it though - the voices, the rhythm, the title. Acetre from Extremadura and Purificas de Monroy:

I really like the voices - however the music sounds a bit like a generic Celtic backing track to my ears.

Hi John - Yes, I know what you mean. In arrangement, it is slightly "celtic lite" - not synthy lite but standard lite.

What lifts it onto another plain for me -

              1. The vocals - how to describe such things? - sort of gritty sweet, smooth yet angular - not obvious or overly-comfortable, not bland - and 2. The rhythms - smooth waves and yet syncopated, certainly as they sweep against the vocals.

It also has a slightly mystical, even religious, way with it.

I would write more but I have to rush for my weekly appointment at pseuds corner. Lat. :cool2:
