the programme:
just go straight to the Toto La Momposina tracks, and don't forget to listen to the interview - powerful, heartening, life-affirming.
Toto with daughter and grandchildren...(and LK of course)

some interesting and enjoyable music from Kiran Ahluwalia last night I thought.
It seems Wo3 sessions are available to download as podcasts.
I certainly downloaded the Toto la Momposina session , and very good it is too.I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

Last week I got to 12.15 with Lopa's Wo3 and wasn't quite sure how I had managed. Last night I dipped in for a while until she described a French performer as 'possibly a genius' before playing a pretty abysmal record...afraid she still irritates me more often than not, sounding like she's reading from an autocue. I tuned out pretty quickly after that...didn't hear the guest. Lopa's on again next week from the Darbar Festival in the exotic Southbank. Where's Mary Ann? Is she alright? All you need is two or three weeks of LK to think what you're missing.

She should listen to some of the old Charlie Gillett shows as a reminder of how to do it.

That Norwegian indie woman was about as miserable as anyone could be.
And she's won awards for it!

...and always good to hear Charlie Patton, even if it doesn't make it onto the playlist.

Generally I won't criticise a genuine attempt at a music programme - I'm not in the habit of knocking Wo3 or Lopa - but it wasn't working for me. Part of it was my attitude. On another day I might have heard Radwimps in a more positive light as a Japanese Noir Desir but I just didn't or couldn't when it was broadcast. The accusation of miserabilism is possibly surprising given some of the things I post but I tend to want something that uplifts on some level even in poignancy or sadness. The modern way can be clumpy musically and I can always tell what is going on in a lyric. Thea Hjelmeland was pressing all of the 21st Century's dark buttons with little redemption. I'm not sure about the Hindi Zahra track either but I like Bombino's input.

Well, I don't want to demonise or unfairly characterise Lopa BUT (you can always tell when a BUT's coming along...) Fridays show was yet another example of a leaden experience. The opening comment
"We've got a lot to get through tonight"
reminding me of school, or one of those days at work when there is actually a lot to do.
Where's the passion, the enjoyment, the delight in discovering, sharing, extending the listeners reach that we hear from other presenters? Missing.
As a result what is normally a pretty good show (the Froots one) turned in a drear occasion.
In case you've missed it, Stick in the Wheel won.
She didn't play this track, but as it is a personal favourite on a topic i find perennially interesting it's the one I like to play
(and thanks to JC for drawing it to my attention initially)

I do enjoy a spot of Tarantella, minus the wolf spider of course. And the BBC Introducing guests on Wo3 on Friday past, Amaraterra, were plenty good value I thought. Didn't listen to the interviews mind you.
Track 3 of the show had a spot of jockrock, which was one of the only other points of note.
Could we perhaps be getting a visit from Oilrig on Friday?
