Consecutive raves about a Lopa Wo3!
    unheard of!
    A taste:
Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

    the programme:
Lopa Kothari presents a studio session with Colombian singer Toto La Momposina.

just go straight to the Toto La Momposina tracks, and don't forget to listen to the interview - powerful, heartening, life-affirming.

Toto with daughter and grandchildren...(and LK of course)

Agreed, Global! Excellent stuff. Actually I was catching up on Wo3 backlog after holidays and really enjoyed the Soil (and of course KassMady Diabate) from Womad and from 3 or 4 weeks back a Malian/Lithuanian crew called Malituanie. Some fine tunes about but Toto was pretty special.

I've started listening to last night's Lopa - had to pause and am now wondering whether to invest the time in the rest.
Has anyone listened to the whole thing? If so, what are your votes/stars or ratings?

some interesting and enjoyable music from Kiran Ahluwalia last night I thought.

It seems Wo3 sessions are available to download as podcasts.
I certainly downloaded the Toto la Momposina session , and very good it is too.

Last week I got to 12.15 with Lopa's Wo3 and wasn't quite sure how I had managed. Last night I dipped in for a while until she described a French performer as 'possibly a genius' before playing a pretty abysmal record...afraid she still irritates me more often than not, sounding like she's reading from an autocue. I tuned out pretty quickly after that...didn't hear the guest. Lopa's on again next week from the Darbar Festival in the exotic Southbank. Where's Mary Ann? Is she alright? All you need is two or three weeks of LK to think what you're missing.

Phew, not just me then; I even wondered the same about MAK....given that there is so little dedicated WM on r3 (in fact - this is it!) it's a shame LK is often below par.
She should listen to some of the old Charlie Gillett shows as a reminder of how to do it.

I came in a bit late tonight - my DAB radio says I'm listening to Ragam Tanam Palavi - not sure if that is artist or music, but whatever it is, it's blinkin' wonderful. Very glad I dropped by!

Thanks Sainty - yes I think it was Ranjani and Gayatri performing. It was a wonderful listen. I had been hanging about with the first show of Jools Holland latest Later series waiting for Rickie Lee Jones, but gave up halfway through her first song - don't think it was her; just JH doing the same stuff he's been doing since whenever and it scunnered me. So I thought I'd listen in on Lopa instead, without much expectation I should say given the last couple of weeks, and I was immediately captivated - Ragam Thanam Palavi must have been on for an hour, and it is an hour that I will revisit. Part of BBC's India season - from the South Bank - not sure if it's the Thames or the Ganges.

                      Bit disappointed by tonight's.

That Norwegian indie woman was about as miserable as anyone could be.

And she's won awards for it!

There were a few tunes I liked OK but too few, Lat. Lopa just can't sustain 2 hours for me. But I particularly enjoyed Hindi Zahra doing 'To the Forces' accompanied by that fine desert blues guitarist, Bombino.

...and always good to hear Charlie Patton, even if it doesn't make it onto the playlist.

Cinq ans plus tard, Hindi Zahra nous emmène encore en voyage avec "Homeland", un disque intense et proche de la nature.

Yes, thanks JC - I joined it at the beginning of the East Pointers' first session and left it at Radwimps. Generally I won't criticise a genuine attempt at a music programme - I'm not in the habit of knocking Wo3 or Lopa - but it wasn't working for me. Part of it was my attitude. On another day I might have heard Radwimps in a more positive light, ie as a Japanese Noir Desir but I just didn't or couldn't when it was broadcast. The accusation of miserabilism is possibly surprising given some of my posts but I tend to want something that uplifts on some level even in poignancy or sadness. The modern way can be clumpy musically and I can always tell what is going on in a lyric. Thea Hjelmeland was pressing the 21st Century's dark buttons with no redemption. I'm not sure about the Zahra track either - it is a bit plodding - but I like Bombino's input and note Lopa did play Kandia earlier!

Sorry Lat, I've said it before too many times but Lopa sounds like she's reading from a teleprompter - soul free for me, I'm afraid. I didn't get as far as Radwimps. I like Bombino. I've got a great live track by him on a compilation of Desert Blues. Great car track - lasts the road from home to work almost exactly!

Well, I don't want to demonise or unfairly characterise Lopa BUT (you can always tell when a BUT's coming along...) Fridays show was yet another example of a leaden experience. The opening comment
"We've got a lot to get through tonight"
reminding me of school, or one of those days at work when there is actually a lot to do.
Where's the passion, the enjoyment, the delight in discovering, sharing, extending the listeners reach that we hear from other presenters? Missing.
As a result what is normally a pretty good show (the Froots one) turned in a drear occasion.
In case you've missed it, Stick in the Wheel won.
She didn't play this track, but as it is a personal favourite on a topic i find perennially interesting it's the one I like to play
(and thanks to JC for drawing it to my attention initially)
Come Down & Meet The Folks performance Sunday, 8th March 2015.

I do enjoy a spot of Tarantella, minus the wolf spider of course. And the BBC Introducing guests on Wo3 on Friday past, Amaraterra, were plenty good value I thought. Didn't listen to the interviews mind you.
Lopa Kothari introduces a special session from BBC Introducing group Amaraterra.

Track 3 of the show had a spot of jockrock, which was one of the only other points of note.

Could we perhaps be getting a visit from Oilrig on Friday?

Mary Ann Kennedy with a session from Don Kipper, plus new releases from across the globe.
