and this from this evening's Wo3: Menelik Wesnatchew - Tezeta
conjures up all kinds of imagery and not necessarily ethiopian, or exotic~ clip-clopping along on the western plain...? adrift on a lazy river....?

      Hello Pippa

      Nice link. Thanks.

Just start a few strings over here instead sainty...it would be great to have some more traffic around these parts.

Thanks for the Menelik link, pippa...can't get enough of that. The Jaipur Kawa Brass Band were pretty good guests last night. I notice we are getting one hour of Mary Ann next week due to prom stuff but then it's back to Lopa again.

Oh, you know how it is, so much to do/hear/investigate........

Will try to pop in more often.

Incidentally, my main folk intake these days comes from this lot.
Independent Music & Culture Journal covering Folk, Roots, Global and Alternative Music - Album Reviews, News, Interviews, New Music, Mixes, Playlists and more

excellent playlists, though oddly, I do miss having just a little presentation.

They seem to do the odd hour of American roots music from time to time.

I was thinking that a thread such as I suggested might generate some traffic over here....me included !!

We could do a " Foreign teams" footy results service too. (and I don't mean the SPL !!)..
actually, on second thought, perhaps not...!!

Another great show from Lopa Kothari - mainly due to the presence of the Carnatic violinist Akkarai S Subhalakshmi

How do we get some traction behind the idea of Lopa hosting a series on Indian Classical music on r3?

I've mentioned it in my consultation response, but fear I may as well have written it on a paper plane and launched it into a strong wind towards Broadcasting House....
Clearly there are paper planes and paper planes...

What a delight to hear the Tashi Lhunpo Monks on Lopa last night and be reminded of last summer's encounter with these special people on Iona and their beautiful performance in the village hall...terrific.
Lopa Kothari presents new world music and a live session from the Tashi Lhunpo monks.

Lopa's still a hard listen, but she had an interesting singer on last week, Josienne Clark, who was performing with Ben Walker, and who sounded as close to Sandy Denny as I remember anyone doing. Indeed 'Mainland' could have been a Denny song. Here's a nice bit of Burns.

An excellent show on Friday - largely due to the modest maestro Paco Pena. In fact, to be honest you could skip the show and just listen to the podcast.

Can someone explain the point of a 'simulcast'? I'd also like to nominate the word for an ugliness award esp. when used out of technical context.

                            This isn't what they mean:

What great guests Khiyo were on Lopa's Wo3.
I wish we had such a beautiful national anthem with lyrics by someone like Rabindranath Tagore, and an inspriring and melodious group who could cause controversy by a rearrangement of the same with the intent of simplifying those lyrics to make them accessible.

For those who missed this treat, here we see a moving performance

I like to think that the great man would have approved greatly, Global...thanks...beautiful indeed. Here's a translation, by the way.

                                My Golden Bengal

                                My beloved Bengal
                                My Bengal of Gold,
                                I love you.

                                Forever your skies,
Your air set my heart in tune
As if it were a flute.

                                In spring, O mother mine,
The fragrance from your mango groves
                                Makes me wild with joy,
                                Ah, what a thrill!
                                In autumn, O mother mine,
In the full blossomed paddy fields
I have seen spread all over sweet smiles.

                                Ah, what beauty, what shades,
What an affection, and what tenderness!
What a quilt have you spread
At the feet of banyan trees
And along the banks of rivers!

Oh mother mine, words from your lips
Are like nectar to my ears.
                                Ah, what a thrill!
                                If sadness, O mother mine,
Casts a gloom on your face,
My eyes are filled with tears!
