    > Some good tunes

I'm sure there were but I was either so tired or my mind was on the blink - either way I don't remember them now !
Awale didn't light my fire either. But then I'm a bit prejudiced when it comes to these countless ' London-based ' bands

i liked em, and as always was pleased to hear the discussion about the london music scene 'below the surface'. why, lopa even allowed members of 'awale' to speak and explain their recent history and performance - potentially a plus. though it was less of a 'scratch' perhaps...more of a brief vague flurry, with compliments in all the right places, prompted by lopa. ideally, i'd liked to have heard what they said in the green room (if the beeb's got one and hasn't demolished it/made the glass ceiling so low, you can't actually enter....only on your knees)!

otherwise, generally the rest of the uk gets a really quite repellent third hand hype version of 'london based bands' (imo too).

i enjoyed (nearly) the whole of lopa's show, and the anti gospel (good phrase jc) was more than welcome right now, in fact an absolute joy - spiritually speaking! happily, it coincided with a gathering at st pauls, a year on from 'occupy' - perfick timing. (where's that vicar gone.... can he dj)?

evidently, sometimes it's good to have your back up against the wall then?!

a bit too mashed probably jc, but then most big cities are multi 'mashed' so in this sense it's a fair reflection.....

but on the other hand, imo it is important to be regularly accused of being a 'purist' in approach. as then you can probably still describe what music styles you like/not which is very useful, (not to mention accredit different styles geographically), rather than sounding like you were born yesterday (a nice but dim approach might be trending - but imo it's destructive in every sense).

for instance, the alternative might be to believe that 'the sun' introduced us to the popular singer charlotte church, when in fact she was donated by martians .... though 'the sun' 'helped' by remarking on her dress size on her arrival from outer space, (complete with relevant numbers) when she was just 14yrs old. this is invariably considered 'important' for a successful singer (according to ru). i only (distinctly) remember because i kept the newspaper cutting, mainly as chris morris was having his image 'improved' in the adjacent article, in fact right next to a photo of charlotte's cleavage. still, she's getting her revenge now - and hopefully she won't stop at £600,000 ....she'll sing at him as well!

the woman (apparently from tunisia) in 'awale' was an interesting singer, i thought. though there's no point telling lopa/listeners that 'not everyone can be amy winehouse'...when it's singers who especially need to listen up, and regardless it won't have any effect. (you could say exactly the same about copying billy holiday .... and that hasn't worked either). so i am just chuffed that's she's valiant enough to sing her own take on north african melodies over 'the mash', (not to mention simply put up with the svengali-alike on 'awale' bass/composition, every inch a 'londoner' regardless of origins, in his endless (self) promotion).

Mexican Institute of Sound. mr h loved that track too. there were loads of brilliant tunes...especially the fardo that turned evil/mad (can't remember the title - i must check it out, when i have more time).

Lopa's seems to have hit a bit of form recently, long may it continue.

I'm going to be really pushed for time too this week, but will try and revisit the session during daylight hours.

Needless to say I never quite got close enough to our local fair trade cinema when it was showing, Paul - looked interesting. Hadn't heard of him before the film appeared.

John, the film was a treat. The scenes of his 1998 concerts in South African were quite extraordinary.

It may fiddle with the facts, but this documentary on the hunt for a long-lost 70s music legend offers a brilliant insight into the nature of fame, writes Philip French

thanks for explanation ....very evocative, heady ....

('logically', imv there really should be a film made about karen dalton's life too! (though it wouldn't be as uplifting as a rounded story, complete with a positive and optimistic ending).

there's maybe many more mex and cherokee artists overlooked in nrth american music history post war?

just having a late night listen to this weeks show and I realised

no tweeets.....no news bulletins... no daft chat....just a high quality of music, and the odd short interview.
                    That'll do for me.
roll on the day i can hear this stuff on my car radio during the day. Enjoyed the Reverend Peyton a great deal, and plenty else.Lovely song by Soname.
Ok, I am pretty untutored in this stuff, but to my ears, its a very good 2 hours of radio.
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

Teamsaint, 97.5% approx of the programmes are recorded hence no interactive pollutants can penetrate the worldly walls. And now that the joke appointment of Pepsi Tim as boss has passed, perhaps it will stay that way. Btw the I think it may be better to stay untutored but remain forever curious !

Lopa had a right good groove going for last night's show, ts. And Rev and his band were very fine - his version of Patton's 'Some of These Days I’ll Be Gone' was fantastic, I thought.
....and if the Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino track is anything to go by they could be a right treat when they're in for a sesh with Lopa in a couple of weeks.

Well they were well worth waiting for - really terrific session, I thought.
Loved the Roge track too and Vera Van Heeringen.
Didn't feel the same about Meiway - aargh!

Yes, the session was absolutely fantastic. Agree about the Vera van H also. They seem to be picking terrific bands to do sessions on this show.

Oh well, I'll be in the minority curmudgeon's corner....

I gave up on the show, tiring of relentless Eurobeat wannabe's caterwauling into the night.

Not for me, it's what the off-switch is for.
