Agreed - looking is probably the best thing...

The programme might have benefited from a little of this:

Macedonian goat-head gaidi made by Risto Todoroski, sirulsko@gmail.com, in Sydney.1. Song on a billy goat gaida, hardwood sleeved in water-buffalo horn. 2. F...

                Otherwise I'm satisfied.

Well, no - ideally it would have had 50 additional tunes.

And to think that the Angelique Kidjo song was the only one to make it onto the Spotify list.

                      Really ?!

I thought that given how long she's been around that the creativity levels were very low.

Well, 'Agolo' was from the second album. Andy Kershaw first devoted a programme to Angelique Kidjo in June 1992 and he featured her again in a live performance in 2006. I think that 'Move on Up' and "Redemption Song', to name but two from the last two albums, were overly obvious and some of the collaborations, ie John Legend, were far from wonderful. 'Zelie' has obviously been done better too. Kidjo though is a crossover artist, isn't she? She always has been. Back in the early 1990s, Keita and others were using synths, Youssou teamed up with Neneh Cherry, and her albums were solidly in that movement. They reached out to a wider audience. That particular track is very successful in that regard. A warhorse but if someone is going to do sunshine....etc.

Kidjo probably gets a bit of stick for who she is as a person. If so, that is unfair. World music often has political contexts. Credit should go to her considerable political involvement. Yes, she can be a little bit sledgehammer vocally. There are others who might not be at the top of any list on voice alone but for whom the political consideration can alter the balance of significance. I think Susana Baca is possibly a good example, although she has far greater sensitivity. So, yes, I was pleased to hear 'Agolo' on Lopa's programme. I don't believe that it would be credible only to give credence to music made between 1900 and 1987 and since 2002. And, with respect, I think it would be hard for R3 to justify Axel Krygier if they were to stick rigidly to a non-commercial format.

For our list, there was a remit. My feeling is that if one doesn't know the audience, other than that they rarely listen to world music, you give them the more significant names in most eras, combine songs that they will instantly recognise with ones that they won't, provide some variety and also moments of intrigue. For example, it would have been far easier not to have chosen 'Guantanamera' than to have chosen it. Including it was daring on one level and on another it provided familiar content against which the unfamiliar could be absorbed. Unlike on R3, we didn't have to consider what might upset regular listeners. That meant freedom. Incidentally, I am obviously pleased by the way that York City have helped to enable the gallant Vale to regroup.

me and jc eagerly awaited the italians, and they didn't let us down

agreed, they ran away with all the prizes on friday's world on 3....

though as far as paul sherratt's list goes, i'm disappointed that the male singing from salentino only got a 7, having expressed being 'handed down a musical culture to preserve' so neatly! so another 8 score imo.

btw paul sherratt, your current nerdypoint score is NOW 100. impressive attention to detail!

Leading that particular scoreboard on the FOR3 forum would be a fine achievenment
