        Another useful post.

        (from the 8 track release)

I've merged the timelines from 2 different sites this one and this one (courtesy of posters here)
then you get a view of the release history of SB:

1980 UK Original on Virgin V2149
1981(?) Australian Original on Virgin V2149 by CBS Records Australia Ltd. (CBS MX 194968/9) - White Label Promo
        1985 UK Re-issue on Virgin OVED 68
198X UK CD on Virgin CDV 2149
1991 US CD on BIZARRE/STRAIGHT R2 70365 - Distributed by Rhino Records - Picture Disc CD (Beefheart art) - lyrics - with US "long box'
1993 Japanese CD on Warner Music Japan WPCP5741 - with Japanese liner notes by YUASA Manabu.
1998 CD EMI Music Distribution 87137
2003 CD Virgin 7871372 the Spotify one
2000 UK Re-issue on audiophile vinyl by Past & Present Records.
        2005 CD Warner Bros.
        2006 LP Warner Bros. 3256I
        2006 UK on Virgin/EMI CDVR2149

but on the inside cover of the 1980 UK Virgin release, all songs are Copyright 1976, and the date on the record label is 1979... enough time stuff, back to the music.

Useful, thanks JR. Makes the one I've bought from G&S at about half the price look a bargain

AArgh - now there are loads for sale.

Anyway the CD has arrived, very enjoyable. I confidently predict Max will be playing at least 1 track, and maybe Cerys & Fiona too.
The accompanying booklet (well-produced little item) makes for an interesting insight into how CB worked, what a demanding person he was to work with and the labyrinthine complexities of producing music in the commercial world, particularly if you are not a mainstream artiste (although I'm not sure even that category is applicable any more).

I'd also forgotten, or maybe never even knew, that CB & FZ were at school together....

I particularly enjoyed the story of how CB got the inspiration for Bat Chain Puller via his windscreen wipers and the wiper motor. Good job it was raining I say...maybe it was one of those Weather Control Machines (actually an anti-Schön-Wetter-Maschine) that were so popular then?

I always remember John Peel once saying that Captain Beefheart used to have lengthy telephone conversations with Viv Stanshall. It's a pity no recordings exist of these surreal exchanges!

Maybe we'll just have to invent them...

Many people wonder why Captain Beefheart decided to call his group The Magic Band.

Well, here's one possible reason... It appears that Don had a part-time job selling these; as captured in this photo.

Selling them gave him an idea, but Don Van Vliet and his Magic Cheese Chips just didn't work...

I know it was Dec 17 when Captain Beefheart died but you may want to dust off your copy of this amazing CD in advance of the anniversary..

I suspect the LJ posse will...

£40.stick with the last 3 albums for now i think.

even doing the floppy boot stomp won't make that feel better.
