haven't replied over there because I think Lat's post sums it up.

I'd rather have less Womad & Lassitude 'highlighted' on r3 & that budget spent on sending Dr Lucy & MAK on their travels. or supporting more WM apprenticeships.
Sorry to gatecrash in here, but I'm seeking refuge from the Lympic ceremony!

Punters may be interested in this feature in the Guardian.

Interesting comment Globaltruth. I do dip in and out of WM output on R3 occasionally - there is definitely some good stuff, but I can see where you are coming from.

An interesting phenomena - this song has been played 259 million times on YouTube, and is a global hit.

Whilst not the kind of thing that fits in to our normal listening, surely it shows that a song does not have to be sung in English in order to receive public acclaim? Bbc controllers take heed?

Gangnam K-stylie rocks out (I am reliably informed)

Will Oilrig play it before OP?

259 million can't be wrong, Global. I prefer this one though given my recent record on this I put the case that this effort is crossover.

          Who's Will Oilrig?
389000 plays 59000000...not really a contest is it.

Whose will? The will of the people. Yeah.

We usually have the 'what do you mean' by 'what do you mean' discussion on this thread... Perhaps leaving the Ravi Shankar thread for discussion of him and his music...

                  good question indeed
but I would go for Slendro myself as you can play the Balinese favourite "hudjan mas" as well as all the Java grooves like "Leaping Lion" and (as we discovered as students) a rather interesting version of "in the mood" but maybe that's NOT world music ?

though this is more like it

                        Yes.

O hang on 'world' - what about the music of the spheres? Where does that fit? Dare we exclude it?

And which precise definition of the word 'music' are we agreeing on?
I found the tinkling noise of marquee tent poles dropping onto an icy pavement in a non-rhythmic way backed by the dull drone of heavy traffic & a rushing waterfall to be an extremely enjoyable musical experience the other day. I'm in the world so was THAT world music ?

I've got into all sorts of trouble for asking that question

Drat, I was relying on you for the definition...( because I suspect I'd probably agree with it...)
