Imperial Court Ensemble - Gagaku Ancient Japanese Court & Dance Music
Comments
Traditional Court Music of Japan, very haunting music. You might recognise the musical style as it was in Kurosawa's Rashomon.
The centerpiece instrument is the Tsuri-Daiko, a large decorated drum.

Junko Ueda - Satsuma-Biwa
Additional Biwa music performance from youtube;
Comments:
The album from spotify isn't entirely traditional, given that it includes a composition from japanese composter Toru Takemitsu. However this style of biwa playing has very close links to Biwa music from the 7th Century and beyond.
There is an interesting article about the artist, her teacher and the general history of the biwa at the following link

Liu Fang on Chinese pipa - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jtrth...eature=related
A performance of Sakura Sakura on dan tranh. There is some dispute as to whether this is in fact Van Anh -
The jury seems to be out on whether the master Nguyen Vinh Bao was born in 1908 or 1918. Let's err on the side of caution:
Here's Vinh Bao, 79, playing the dan gao with Hoang Cô Thuy on dan tranh. Bluesy in feel; ragged but right -
And at 91 providing a lesson on the dan kim - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_UWBfD6VkI

Performance of Asturias by Albeniz with the traditional t'rưng -
This is probably my favourite. An interesting group with the extraordinary k'ni -

On the subject of whether it is Van Anh, she certainly looks like this Van Anh, I think.

Ustad Asad Ali Khan - Maestro's Choice Series One
Comments
Do check out the youtube video, it is an amazing performance, with the rare Rudra Veena. An ancient large variant of the Veena.
The spotify is also a great place to hear the Rudra Veena, played by one of the instruments greatest masters, who unfortunately based away in 2011. Ustad Asad Ali Khan.

geoff, that is really quite stunning but begs the question, 'What's the most awkward instrument that you've seen played?'
His sidekick is getting a pretty easy ride from the looks of things.Last edited by johncorrigan; 03-01-12, 10:29.
