Traditional Ethnic Music (on Spotify & YouTube)

Hope this topic is allowed, just thought I'd set up a thread to highlight good traditional ethnic music on spotify, as the search function isn't the best (and traditional albums aren't the easiest to find on it).

    Starting with;

Hamza El Din's The Water Wheel

    Comments:

Nubian music of Egpyt played on the Oud as pictured below

    Hypnotic.

Thank you for these. I listened to them on Spotify. This music has a rare dignity and it is reflected by the covers which like the instruments are beautiful.

The godson of a good friend of mine is planning to go to SOAS. I believe he is expecting to focus on African Studies at the School but no doubt Dr Lucy will be there to broaden that out a bit. His brother has just been selected as one of the last ten in the competition "Young Drummer of the Year". If he follows a similar path, the tonbak and the daf possibly await him.

Iranian music should be seen to have a special current role, given the politics there. It also needs to be considered with thought about the draconian view of music in the Ahmadeinejad regime. I assume that the traditionalism of Hossein Alizadeh makes him acceptable, whatever achievements he has had in the West? I hope so.

There is quite an interesting discussion on the Proms board about the disruption to the concert given by the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra, whether the IPO should have been invited, and what should or shouldn't happen if the Iranian Philharmonic Orchestra were to be invited next year. It is an interesting idea.

                Thanks Lateralthinking, an interesting post.

It seems like not everyone here has spotify, so I might try to post some examples of these instruments on youtube as well as album examples on spotify.

Cho Okchu - North Korean Duet for Kayakum (Stringed Zither) & Janggu (Hour-Glass Shaped Drum)

                      Comments:

A very rare glimpse of North Korean music, quite brilliantly played with a more energetic/aggressive approach than the South Korean Kayakum music I've heard. Cho Okchu is supposedly a student of the National Conservatory of Music in Pyongyang, North Korea.

                      Kayakum

                      Janggu

Byungki Hwang - The Best of Korean Gayageum Music

                        Comment:

A steep contrast to the previously posted North Korean piece, a bit more subtle and 'pretty'.

Dear Mr LikesMusic, or may I call you Geoff, I'm holding my breath here waiting for some Ethiopian gems...although all the above are very welcome - thanks.

                          I like your style.

                            Best Wishes.

Yoshikazu Iwamoto - Traditional Japanese Music

(note: not from same album on spotify)

                              Comments:

Nothing is more haunting & settling for the soul than some good Shakuhachi music. Yoshikazu Iwamoto is a true Shakuhachi master, and is resident in the UK.

Supposedly there was a 4 programme series on Radio 3, regarding the Shakuhachi. Has anyone heard/have a copy of this series?

Biographic details on 'Komuso.com' the one stop website for the Shakuhachi.

This page about Japanese music specialist Iwamoto Yoshikazu may include information such as their biography, photo, list of recordings, and list of compositions.
