Sometimes I have an uncanny feeling that Max is hooked into my sound system. I'd been playing an Arthur Russell track last week (first time for years ). First time I came across him was in 1996 on David Toop's excellent (and now quite rare) Crooning on Venus compilation
and Taverner's The Lamb has been a regular late night listen for us quite often just lately.
How does he do that?
But, in terms of musical obscurity & excellence, he won't be down at the old church tomorrow listening to my grand-daughters first ocarina piece though... (or will he?)

GT, I wouldn't call the macarena obscure.
No news of tonight's LJ on the net but this is Thursday - http://drownedinsound.com/in_depth/4...amp-nils-frahm
All to the good but what now is the definition of live?

By the way, ain't Max great!* I mean who else is going to have Joseph Spence and Bing as the bread and a twenty-five minute minimalist gamelan piece as the filling...inspired.
*Rhetorically spoken, needless to say!Last edited by johncorrigan; 20-12-12, 13:22. Reason: I wrote this live but that's not when you're reading it!

as with 'archive', 'live' is just as contentious?
a solution: get out your fave old pots & pans, make sweet music, (but don't record it)?

Overall almost as good as the massed ocarenas of our village primary school; they produced a piece worthy of a late night LJ, in fact I briefly considered sending them the recording; there were some unintentionally spooky sounds, possibly due to the fact that some of them were playing a different song, some were playing at the wrong speed, some were just winging it. All the notes were there, just not in the right order all the time. Overall it echoed wonderfully round the 18c Church & was a great result for the inaugural outing of Miss Marshall's Ocarena Group.
Ye Gods and Little Fishes, I'm coming over Xmassy. Heaven forfend.

Surely it isn't the same Miss Marshall who taught me to play the ocarena in 1966. That would be uncanny. I like the way the young Trevor Brooking painted lines on her white top first. A very professional job and set off nicely by the ribbon.

As usual the interview didn't add much though; these youngsters have no grasp of enigmatic charisma, but that's maybe the world they live in.
And will Maximum actually be live on Xmas Day? I bet he will...I hope I am live enough to listen.

Thanks handsomefortune, best listening wishes to you too.
Max sounded very relaxed night (25/12)
Would it have be the mulled wine do you think ?

That Johnny 'guitar' Watson track? Well, he partied on down with FZ a bit later...
I preferred the Boxing Day show to the Xmas Day one...some choice items & the Hendrix 'Mary' influence on Miles Davis was fascinating.
I've made a note to check out Kid Koala too - wonder which of Lat's Lists he'd fall into...is there an "unclassifiable" category?
Update on KK: he's on Sotify (sic) & to my mind falls into the Little Axe/Skip McDonald bag, leaning more towards to break beats than blues beats. One track great, two tracks ok, 3 tracks = enough already. Like his approach though - giving away with his CD a free build-your-own cardboard gramophone wins extra points; stage show sounds fine too.Last edited by Globaltruth; 27-12-12, 18:38.
