A typical day at Radio 3's Late Junction. The agent of David Sylvian has just popped in for his weekly chat.

Caption: "Nick, as you say you are into the music of Japan, can I offer you some Obscure Alternatives?"

Editor's Note: The album that featured their biggest hit "Too Shy". Limahl subsequently had a successful solo career.

.......OK, to be serious and fair, Nick did quite a good job. He's obviously one of the good guys. A bit "kind of, sort of" but keen and knowledgeable. Both he and JB were pleasantly restrained in delivery a la CG. Maybe I could learn something. Certanly, the ping pong should be made into a regular feature again. And you can't really knock a guy who was involved in those fantastic Nick Drake recordings. Very hard to beat in my opinion. A lot of that though was to do with the late Robert Kirby. Hence Fleck and Fumie, from Japan, were somewhat ambitious in their choice of song. They do a passable Stereolab but not nearly as good.

I have never taken much to Teddy Thompson whatever his pedigree. His version of Saratoga Summer Song is though the best I've heard him achieve. It was also staggering to hear how much of Rufus you could hear in the structure and the lyrics. Almost uncanny. The angriest album from Ry Cooder could be rewarding. Will want to listen to that one in full. Shuggie Otis is expecting to release his fifth album very soon but that has been said before. The Cab Calloway track was excellent. Great voice.

Terry Callier managed with the vocal on Dancing Girl to find the meeting point between Drake and Scott-Heron. I always think of Robert Elms when I hear him as he has followed him for years. A very good track but it went on for too long. Callier does that a lot. The Dundee Wandering Singers link back in some ways to Miriam Makeba. JB explained how and it was worth hearing. I see that Dundee has even been given Scotland's Prom in the Park. Extraordinary. Loved the King Sunny Ade and Toots and the Maytals. Brotherhood of Breath very, very good. Some of the other choices not so.

        More Dundee Cakewalk anyone ?

Still not completed listening to this programme but there are some fine moments indeed.
But then I'm a fan of breaking up any routines

Surprising comment ~ This program was hardly iconoclastic...
...JB trotting out his usual routines, quietly supported by the bland NL.
Even Ry didn't sound that angry.

give me WFMU for mould-breaking, or that there Chain on Spot.

Blimey Global I've only heard old Boyd two or three times previously ! Where else has he been hiding ? But last night did break up the more regular Late Junction
texture for me ( 'That's What I Call Iconoclasm ! ' ) Now they could fly Pat Conte over for a programme or two although I'm not sure he travels ... costs might be shared with
the Cerys M show as she rather likes PC's collections

As for Old Spot, well it can certainly be seen as something which will make an increasing number of radio programmes more or less redundant ( imo )

            PS
That Ry wouldn't pass the ipod test.

Hmm, I suppose on the whole it was better than the piped Muzak in B+Q in Hanley...

Just dropped in to say he plays some great music, judged on the first hour of tonight (Wednesday's) show. Does he do a regular spot, because if so I'll make a point of listening again.

Welcome pilamenon to these boards. Hope to hear from you more often.

Mr S - I have been collecting beans at the Priory - a farm, not a rehabilitation centre - but it all got a bit wobbly on the ladder so I am now home and in the process of counting them. The Meg Baird cd has hit my desk I am happy to say. Looking forward to listening to it this evening.

Actually Lat, the one on your desk ( and mine as it happens ) is from June 2007.
But there is a shiny new one out very soon so I've spent a minute or two this morning
trying to point a few review copies in the right direction.

                      Enjoy the beans !

                        Lat you are so polite.
                        Quite puts me to shame.
And I meant to say I loved that David Sylvian post you did back there somewhere. Post #16.

Now wasn't Meg Baird married to a Gallagher for a bit?
Till she reverted to her John Logie ancestry?
Or maybe I'm getting confused with my chum the Baird of Avon cosmetics?

Thanks GT. Apparently she was in Espers. They were the group who weren't Vetiver. Or Tunng.

Unfortunately I found the first half hour of Thursday's programme depressing. Sorry.

Well Paul, a quick glance down the playlist makes it look like a good programme to have a listen to. (aka some fine artistes & light on the classical)
