Righto chaps, is that all clear then? Certainly reads like it.

So enough of all this violent agreement, let's, as I like to say, get back to the music.
I believe Vieux Farka Toure has a new album out. Has anyone actually listened to it yet? And if so what does it tell us? I'd see if it was on Spottle if I wasn't trapped in this Garrett with Verlaine,Rimbaud and flipping A. Jarry.

I'm warning you that i'm thinking of changing the thread title to A Bag of Bits. I like this thread and if it was a person I'd probably be happy to spend a few hours in a bar with it talking more than drinkIng. If it was a vegetable it would be a member of the brassica family, underrated, versatile and best when fresh. So maybe it should be The Call Any Vegetable thread?

I was wondering if Mark Coles might be playing this crew in his wee hut, Global.

I'm treating my colleagues in work to an old AK tape and the Boys are performing from their first R1 session - pure delight, I have to say.(not sure what the other occupants think)

Yes, I have the Shed Sessions on cd and Tsvimbodzemoto on vinyl. Favourite tracks include Chekudya Chose, Padeke, Simbinbino and Chumanimani. I also have on cassette Andy's programmes on Zimbabwe and Mali which I recorded from the radio years back. I probably shouldn't say that though. His friendship with Biggie Tembo was special and a lot of fun. I particularly recall the scenes in the family home and at the falls.

Additionally, I have both on vinyl and cd Makorokoto by the Four Brothers. They have slightly different track listings. I tend to think at times that I am relatively new to this game but when I look at the dates of these releases I realise I am not. Seeing that the political situation here could seem grim in the late 1980s, it is a period I recall with considerable affection and music was very central to the joy. Incidentally, the cover of Makorokoto has gone from this -

          to this -

.......which is a pity because the first is actually a photograph taken by Mr K himself.

It's also a much better cover (quality pic Andy!) - I haven't seen that first one before cos I've only got it on CD.

The chapter on Biggie in No off Switch is quality - when he went to Biggie's wedding they went to a rally for the 10th anniversary of Mugabe - Andy blagged his way through onto the pitch and he rhymes off a list of African leaders who are walking past him - when reading it I was wondering if any of the other Jocks from R1 would have had a clue who these men were. Of course he shook Mandela's hand, fresh from London and took a rather excellent photo of him (it's in the book) before being despatched to the stands by security where Biggie was waiting and everyone wanting to shake the hand of the man who shook hands with the great man. He reports that he said to Mandela 'You spend 27 years in prison, they let you out and they give you a Simple Minds concert, eh?”

I had to go into Dundee for to get me some prunes and while I was there I took the chance to drop in on this rather interesting exhibition by Scottish Artist Ruth Ewan.
Dundee Contemporary Arts is a world-class centre for the development and exhibition of contemporary art and culture. This vision is delivered by our staff through our mission, aims and objectives and is supported by our key stakeholders.

While my good lady wife wandered around I found that Ms Ewan had installed a juke box with around 1000 songs in a variety of categories - feminism, Central America, Peace, Revolution, Work, Politics...and she had chosen songs in those categories and you could play the songs for free to enliven your gallery visit. Global you will not be surprised to hear that I plumped immediately for 'Mad John' in the Environment/Ecology section; I spotted a bit of fela Kuti in the Africa section; some memphis Minnie in the Feminism section; there was a whole bit on Paul Robeson too - I was spoiled for choice. Had to be dragged away in case of traffic wardens and in case the prunes got cold. I'm definitely going back there - everywhere should have one - mind you I didn't bother about the Phil Collins entry but I did play some GSH - pleasingly there was a fair bit of him in there - best visit to Dundee I've had since the Saints beat United - oops, sorry Global - wash me mouth out with prune juice.

Well I was having a wee dance around to GSH at one point, Global, so Harry Hill here I come! Maybe Mary Ann might be interested in the jukey - it might be a nice wee spot in her Radio Spotland GG show.

John, I am becoming quite astonished at the range of concerts and arts you get in your area. When you think about the role that the Croydon Art School once had, there is so little here now and the population of the borough is getting on for 350,000.

GT - Nice song from Iarla. And on pruning - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2fyvfX_gLo

Great to have someone like you Global to organise my cultural life - off to book the ticket - I mean I only chanced on the exhibition in the first place - that's one jukebox I tell you. Finding and listening to 'Mad John' in the Gallery instead of in the car was a real joy.

Those Highland sessions programmes on Beeb 4 were a quiet masterclass - I only saw a couple but will be looking out for them when they come around again.
