Michael Morpurgo's Folk Journeys on BBC R4

I wasn't sure quite what to expect from this new series on Radio 4 which aired this afternoon, but I found it very enjoyable, and at times very moving. Some fine folk voices in there as MM started with an exploration of 'Johnny I hardly Knew You.'

Agreed. Bit slow maybe? i.e. he established the line and then dawdled a trifle?
Good music. Hurray that SOMEONE realises how good Coope, Boyes and Simpson are.

Certainly a wee bit slow, Draco, but I enjoyed programme 2 based on the 'Four Loom Weaver'. I thought it covered an interesting range of ideas in half-an-hour.

I like slow though...not always, but works well here.

Mr Morpurgo would need a bit of neurofunk or some nu-school breaks to make him break from a gentle canter into a gallop.

I'd enjoy hearing that, Global. I think you should pitch it to the Beeb. Karine Polwart continues to impress.

P.S Enjoyed the 'War Horse' references.

Nay, JC, think they’d want to rein that one in.

True, GT. Don't want to stirrup unnecessary problems!

Episode 3 - a passing gratuitous mention of sean nós but mainly dedicated to the lurvv song.
Think I've realised the issue with Mr Morpurgo - it is his flat and joyless delivery.
Does not sound as if he is enjoying himself.
As his voice stitches the programme together, the overwhelming character of the programme reflects that rather listless voice. Ho hum.
Some of the contributions were better than others.
Any road up, here's the version of 'The First Time' from the 2015 Celtic Connections, as mentioned:
                Performed by Paul Buchanan
Paul Buchanan (The Blue Nile) performing the classic Ewan MacColl song, The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall as part of the ...

(caution: clip contains a "pop music singer" - who does more than justice to the song, making it sound new imho)

                Blue Nile eh....Hats LP.

I take on board what you're saying, Global. He does sound a bit worthy. Nonetheless, I still found this series interesting, and at times quite moving. That was the sense I got as episode 4 progressed and folk singers talked about their experiences writing songs of migration. They could have had a better voice to stitch the progamme together, but many of the contributors have made up for MM's flat delivery...he does seem like a rather morose persona. By the way, I recalled that he was on Desert Island Discs and when I checked I notice that he chose Coope Boyes & Simpson as one of his picks.

C,B &S are a serious team. Glad Mr M has the insight to name them in DID!

I wish the use of initials was less on these threads - particularly when i can’t work them out!

Quite agree- especially when they are misnamed as here, on Post 9. Hang your head in shame JC.

C,B & S are Cooper, Boyes and Simpson. Here they are singing 10000 miles as discussed:

rare performance which was featured and recorded from BBC radio 2.

Sorry about that, Global. In my defence, I did think that was their name but it said something different on the Desert Island Discs page as you will notice, and I reckoned they never get anything wrong, whereas I regularly do.

Nevertheless, it's a fair cop...slap on the bracelets!

Thanks Global - if I’d wound down the thread I would have discovered.
