Jon Hassell leaves planet age 84

. let’s celebrate him still going strong at 83 rather than a mournful thread when he dies.

Sadly Jon Hassell died on Jun 26.

He served his apprenticeship with Stockhausen, worked with minimalists Terry Riley and LaMonte Young, studied Indian music under Pandit Pran Nath, and collaborated with artists like Talking Heads, and Peter Gabriel.
Both composer and trumpeter Jon Hassell he was an elusive and independent musical figure for more than half a century.

He developed specific trumpet techniques to play microtones of Indian music – electronic and acoustic, played with Farafina (an ‘idea’ of the music of Burkina Fasso, a group that also acts as a school for musicians) as an accepted outsider where they can be heard to good effect on this track

The next is one of his most popular tracks - an early fore runner of what was to become known ( for the usual marketing reasons) as ambient music…

This is sad news. I knew he'd been ill for a while because some of his associates put together a crowdfunding campaign to help with his medical bills (only in America! (so far)). I met him once briefly in LA while visiting my friend Dan Schwartz who played bass guitar on some of his albums and various live performances. If ambient music is music you can ignore if you feel like it, most of Hassell's music isn't really ambient at all, being much too edgy and involving. His last couple of albums are among his best I think.
