Malcolm John Rebennack a.k.a. Dr John

Sad to see the passing of the great New Orleans voodoo man, Dr John at 77. Great tunes and rasping voice but New Orleans through and through.

Here he is in 'The Last Waltz' with The Band.

Great boogie woogie player, introducing some of us to the Spanish-influenced rhythms and metres that came into the music before the railroad shuffle more-or-less usurped the genre in the 1930s. Gosh - he was only 3 years older than myself: I thought he'd been around forever!

What Jelly Roll Morton called 'the Spanish Tinge'?

This is the original (not Morricone's ) version of the song, played by the composer himself.

Great number John. I recorded The Last Waltz at the time - full of great numbers.

Apparently the good Doctor once played a gig in Blairgowrie...before I came to these parts; but the Bard o' Dundee, Michael Marra, wrote a song about it called 'Mac Rebennack's Visit to Blairgowrie'.

They came out for him! A little of the Second Line send-off.
