    Thx JR

First journalist who has a) bothered to try and talk to Alan Davey b) presented any sort of reasoning as to why these cuts may be being made.

[Ofcom] does not prescribe programming much at all, merely asking that BBC’s radio stations are ”distinctive”. This means that there has been much in-house head-scratching as to what “distinctive” means. Does it mean diverse programming you won’t get on commercial radio? Or does it mean doubling down on what your station is known for? If you’re a classical music station, must you now become ultra-classical, none-more-classical, classical-and-how?

It seems that this last is the interpretation favoured by BBC heads. Radio 3 is shifting to becoming “distinctively” classical. Not in a listen-to-the-film-tunes Classic FM or Scala manner, but in the manner of a deep dive into classical music.

I'm unhappy about the way R3 is going. One of the joys has always been the different music that is broadcast, even though I am a classical fan first and foremost.

On last week's R4 Feedback, Roger Bolton mentioned the cuts and said that they'd invited ADto discuss them, but that he was "unavailable" - although he might be available at a later date, once they've invented the excuses.

I reckon that changes like these are done deals, with contracts signed well before they're ever made public. Licence Fee Payers' reactions are then only taken into account if there's a public outcry such as this one - and then they confect the fluff to say how much better the results will be. Fast forward three years or so, and then a new Controller comes up with a bright idea for a "brand new" programme - that's exactly the same format as the one previously ditched.

So - keep those youTube videos coming on the Forum - they're needed more than ever, folks.

I agree entirely with the Youtube finds, one of the many great things about this place. Off to post a link now while I think of it. :)

This 'distinctive content' idea in BBC stations originated with former Tory Culture Secretary John Whittingdale:

The BBC must put "distinctive content" at its heart, Culture Secretary John Whittingdale says, as he announces a major overhaul of how the corporation is run.

The authority of party whips has taken something of a beating since that time.

The Whips have been creamed a few times lately.

Which makes it puzzling that the late night jazz programme is being removed which covers more left-field (less commercial) areas of jazz and so could fairly be described as being 'distinctive'.

                        Quote from the BBC Dictionary:

"Distinctive" - exactly the same sort of programmes that everyone else is doing, but with our own presenters.

And so Late Junction begins its untimely shuffle to a once weekly slot....

                              * last night and tonight episodes with Fiona Talkington followed by the inevitable Mixtape
                              * Nick Luscombe allowed back into the room on Tues Sept 24
                              * ditto Max Reinhardt on Weds Sept 25
                              * a quick game of Radio Ping-Pong by Max and Nick on Thurs Sept 25 and off they go, who knows where
and, er, that's it for the 3 nightly slot because on Tues Oct 1 instead there is Night Tracks,
which, as you can see from the description is radically innovative, demographic-grabbing, etc...
Oct 1 Night Tracks - An adventurous, immersive soundtrack for late-night listening, from classical to contemporary and everything in between. Includes music by Ives, Alissa Firsova and Mulatu Astatke.
Oct 2 Night Tracks - An adventurous, immersive soundtrack for late-night listening, from classical to contemporary and everything in between. Includes Debussy, and Ali Farka Touré and Toumani Diabaté.
