More sad news in the new edition of Songlines. Biram player Mamane Barka has died aged 59.
Mamnane Barka single-handedly ensured the continued use of the biram, a stringed instrument from southern Niger. I saw him in concert a few years ago at the Howard Assembly Rooms in Leeds, sharing the bill with and playing alongside Etran Finatawa. He will be sorely missed. RIP.
