    Oliver Mtukudzi RIP

I've just seen this on the BBC website: _

Renowned musician Oliver Mtukudzi came to prominence as a voice of the revolution fighting white-minority rule.

He was 66; the cause of death is not given. He was an oppopnent of Mugabe and ZANU/PF who used carefully-worded lyrics to disseminate his message. RIP Oliver.

Very sad news. Another true great goes and, yes, I would say he was a big World Music name. Certainly he was a diabetic There was also speculation that he was HIV positive though he sought to quash it. I am not quite sure how that would have played out medically given a combination of him being in Africa and what was, in effect, a global status. It had proved devastating to the Bhundu Boys, whatever their fame, but in slightly different times. I never saw him live but I liked his music very much. He stood out as one with a social conscience.

That is one of my favourites.

Your article says that he released an album in February last year. Did we catch on to this on the forum? I am not so sure we did but it is almost a year now. I will post some more later!

A world music hero from a time when Zimbabwean and Southern African music ruled the World Music stage; and thus adversely affected by the latter days of Mugabe. Very sad to see him go.
