Our old pal Mary Ann was on Radio Scotland this evening advertising the Solas Festival online - usually on this weekend in Perthshire - great to hear her on the radio at any old time.

September - dedicated to the music of Walter 'Kid' Smith.
Caution - contains yodelling and doodloo-a yay-oh.
The show kicks off with this song:
In his usual obsessive, completist manner, John has written the biography of the criminal that the song is about.
More power to him I say.
Walter 'Kid' Smith had more than 1 string to his bow it seems:

A new podcast that has been going a mere 18 years...Podwireless, previously known aa 'fRoots Radio', is a regular monthly web radio show, based around the world of folk, roots and unpop music.
It's presented by Ian Anderson, a performer in his own right I(not the one you're maybe thinking of) who was also the man behind the (now sadly defunct) froots magazine.
He has kept podwireless going as a labour of love.
Recent editions (described in Ian's own words)
August's mid-month Podwireless special was Koernercast: 1963 – 1972: Spider John’s First Decade revisiting a tribute podcast from back in 2013. On 31st August, my friend, hero and American national treasure Spider John Koerner hit 82. For nearly 50 years he’s been doing his funky bar-room thing to classic American folk songs, but in the previous decade to that he evolved his approach to music on mostly original songs inspired by the old blues players, with one of the funkiest acoustic guitar styles you could want to hear. Enjoy 26 tracks from Spider John’s first decade which are sure to surprise and thrill you, including some solid gold rarities.PLAYLINK: PODWIRELESS KOERNERCAST REVISITED (This playlink is to Mixcloud streaming: you can also download th...
The special extra July mid-month archive edition of Podwireless featured two classic summer 2010 programmes from this show's predecessor fRoots Radio. A reminder of what the wonderful world of folk and roots music was like a decade ago.PLAYLINK: PODWIRELESS ARCHIVE SUMMER 2010 For those of you who (like me) are still preferring to stay in, here's a mid-mon...
Following previous mid-month specials on Europe, West Africa and country blues, June's mid-month lock-in special Podwireless No Voices brought it all back home with 150 minutes dedicated entirely to instrumental folk and roots music made by people who live (or lived) in England.PLAYLINK: PODWIRELESS NO VOICES (ENGLAND) (This playlink is to Mixcloud streaming: you can also download the podcasts from Podomati...

You can find the podcast itself on Mixcloud at mixcloud.com/frootsradio or on Podomatic at froots.podomatic.com/ – it can be downloaded from the latter.
On Mixcloud the shows go back to odd episode from 1993, including some where he is sitting in for AK on r1.
He's also set up a FB group for printed folk ephemera, if that floats your boat...
Folkprint – 20th Century Folk & Roots Music Magazines is a new Facebook group for collectors and aficionados of – or just the curious about – printed magazines that specialised in folk, roots and traditional musics from around the world published before 2000. Plus lots of other ventures into printed ephemera of those days like concert & festival programmes, club newsletters etc. Discussions, anecdotes, background information, favourite features, resources and more!
If you're interested, you can find it at https://www.facebook.com/groups/Folkprint/

I love Minnie, GT!
I read about this at weekend. It's from SOAS Radio and is 'Alban Low's A-Z of Africa'. Alban takes us across the continent from Algeria to Zimbabwe, one record at a time. Looks like there's about 12 or 13 episodes running to around 20 minutes each. Here's the link to programme 1...enjoyable stuff!

There was an end-of-year 'The Bard is Well: the songs of Michael Marra' the other night. I watched the hour and a half of it yesterday and very enjoyable it was indeed as many people from in and around Tayside performed Michael's songs - I particularly enjoyed the takes on ' If I was an Englishman' and 'Angela Gunn', but I have to say that highlight for me was a kitchen table version of that late song he made with the Hazey Janes, 'Heaven Hound'. All in aid of the Systema music project in Douglas, a housing scheme in Dundee. Michael was instrumental in setting up the project before his untimely death in 2012. One of the delights of the vid was to see the range of ages who are still performing his wonderful songs.

Occasional sojourns into the Excavated Shellac blog:
Latest entry, by Jonathan Ward (JW) on Feb 6 featuring Joropo harp music from Venezuela..
Quintin Duarte and Salvador Rodriguez – La Resbalosa
This group were recorded on the Victor label - although JW points out they didn't release the records until 3 years later and total sales were between 2000-3000.
Most (all?) of the music he discusses is not available via standard channels so JW helpfully provides this link to the Discography of American Historical Recordings:
