Verity very Jazzy Tuesday night - good oh!

Beginning to warm to Sam Lee and his type of music - although I find this very literal type of music difficult to appreciate. MAK seems to play a lot of it; I recall a song by an accident-prone Irishman played recently; the humour was lost on me. Oh well, may be I'll see it one day!

A little Lee goes a long way, imo, Oddball.
Like that pate de foie gras, I should imagine,
I wonder where Global T would place Mr Lee in his ideal late night programme ?

        Ahhh - John Cage.

Thank you Verity. Much obliged for highlighting my problem with John. Very interesting, very witty, very avant-garde, very sacred-cow busting. But just not humorous enough for my taste.

Agree in spades, give me Thy Leg Rumba every time.
          It's dead easy - that Sam Lee he's a one-trick pony, a one-track pony.
So in my hundred year scheduling he'd get one track. Every hundred years
Pleasingly lost in the overall interest of Tues.

D'ye think she's been talking to OP about Klezmer though?

Does the critique need a tad more? This brief article could be a great starting point -

            http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2012...psy-folk-music

I do get the point about him being samey, there is overkill, a marketing thing a la Moray and Lakeman and a question about him being "just another posh boy from London". But I am probably quite impressed by his background work. Does he seem slightly more authentic than the other two? Maybe. Is he really that different in his approach from, say, Martin Carthy in the 1960s? Not sure.

I've written a few reviews of Sam Lee but never posted them - its down to personal taste & he's not around to defend himself - although I would like some reassurance from somewhere that at least some of the money he makes goes back to the Romany community whose songs he is the self-appointed 'guardian' of... And if that particular community doesn't need or want it there are plenty of organisations trying to help resolve some of the many issues around literacy, alcoholism & abuse which blight them.
That Guardian article propagated the rosy romantic myth...

                Yes. Very fair points.

                Those lines though -

"How many blackberries grow in the salt sea?/ And I gave my reply with a tear in my eye/ As many ships sail in the forest"

                .........are fantastic!

i am only just catching up with verity tbh, having lingered a while on a few brilliant tracks from the show the week before, presented by fiona.

After a few hectic days at work I took some time to do a spot of Verity Catch-up while the web was holding out. Don't know if it was the time of day or what but the Sparklehorse from Tuesday was just the job and the Vent du Nord before it made for a great wee segue.

Yes, she seems to have a genius for placing tracks together so as to approach a piece of music from a different angle - viz. Kit Downes last night.

Yes, those hectic work days - I'm just having a break from one when I shouldn't.

Verity well worth catching up on in preference to almost anything else.

In passing, you may notice the Chris Wood track at the end of Thursday's show - a new electric album is due out from him on Feb. 16.

(as well as fiona t's last sesh).

neither have made stupid comments about music, or (to) musicians, bliss for listeners... in comparison.

Verity stands alone. No tweets, no emails, no gush, no self-projection - except in the sense that less is more - and above all acres of MUSIC and a fine voice for radio. What's not to like?

One of the benefits of pre-recording is...

Verity Sharp with music by Nancarrow, Brahms and Santiago de Murcia.

Following on from 'John Barleycorn', Global, did I detect hints of 'John Ball' in Tim Edey's 'Richard's Minuet' or was that just me - made for a fine segue. Still loving that Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino after there Wo3 appearance.
