The last time the MMP were played, Lat, I was thousands of miles away from where I thought the singing was coming from...... which is probably right since I'm thousands of miles from Nepal, but I'm sure you know what I think I mean. Anyway I didn't think Nepali.

I'm assuming she isn't live - haven't listened yet. (so obviously I'm not a live listener this time)

Shame - I would have prevailed upon her to play my jubilee anthem....

Johnny Dowd's new album, "No Regrets" will be released on Johnny's own label, Mother Jinx Records, on April 2, 2012. It will be available in stores in Europe...

Poor old Betty. Worse for her, men never stop talking and bicker whereas women are just mates, go down the pub together or off to football and get on with things.

I'm finding V a bit challenging tonight. It is wall to wall spooky folk. I prefer folk.

Still, the programme's more worthwhile than accordion wrestling probably.

In the 40s and 50s, accordion wrestling was huge in Finland. Stephen Moss meets the man who's bringing it here

Somewhere in the infinite universe they've spiced it up by combining with the chessboxing championship, though I fear VS might get drowned out in the subtext.
The chessboxing fight between Iepe the Joker and Luis the Lawyer continues... Round three to the end! You can watch the full fight and many others by becomin...

            >>>> She went to York.

As I did last night to see ' Betty's creator. Now VS used to be a big Dowd fan, but is she still ? Odds available from your everyday gambling supermarket, no doubt.

Oh yes, so he was, at Fibbers on Stonebow. I've not been in there yet but then it has only been open since 1992. I would genuinely like to hear what you think of it as a venue.

Unfortunately, I can't say enjoy a pint at the wonderful John Bull because they bulldozed it many years ago. However, if you have a chance to pop into the Blue Bell on Fossgate, do so. While it has changed - no longer the no nonsense 90 and 70 year old mother and daughter management team - it is still a tiny historical gem.

I used to love the fact that you had to pull a cord to open the curtains around the bar to be served - possibly not there now - the sloping floor and the great old sports pictures and photos on the walls. Nowadays, the excellent Black Sheep on tap too.

Fibbers the venue is just fine. Unadorned concrete and very dark. Stage at front, bar and other reliefs at the back.
The only thing missing was an audience !

Isn't it a place to dance to the music of the locomotive band ?

                    Not this one, mind you.

Thanks for the description. It would have been double that number if he had been featured on URY.

The playlists's not up yet - extension of the long weekend, I assume - but I really enjoyed the first hour of Verity's LJ last night - always great to hear Wood's 'Spitfire', and the handbells and the trumpet tune were terrific. I do have a slight issue about the description on the info page - the sultry voice of Karen Dalton - that's not how I've ever thought of it - must go away and contemplate it.

Still don't hear sultry from KD even after the second great track, though I do from VS - that was a top show - great bit of Bryars in there too later on - can't say when - the Playlist's still not there.

Cracking show. How does Verity manage so often to score so many bullseyes when other presenters of LJ just do not touch the nerve?
The mix is themed, eclectic and fascinating.

Loved the Emily Portman track too - totally agree, DM - a crackling programme!

                                - the sultry voice of Karen Dalton

someone's got confused with their notes jc ....? perhaps described the earthing effect dalton has ...rather than what she actually sounded like? as paul sheratt pointed out recently (somewhere on the world music forum) recordings can potentially be a bit of an albatross in lots of ways. imv ultimately, dalton's album means you can still hear her in 2012, but probably not a patch on what she sounded like when she played and sang live IRL.

to my ears, her voice & old time banjo combined sound uniquely questioning, world weary, half cut, and thoroughly magical, ...i hear an impressively independent thinker, and yet she's an 'oldtime' performer...(even by 60/70s styles).

iirc the 71 album on spotty is recorded all wrong jc ..occasionally pretty out of sync, i guess because her phrasing as she sung is normally dictated by, interdependent with her banjo pick/chord changes. i get the impression dalton might have recorded the tracks separately for the studio ... sometimes encouraged by producers ...(for lots of reasons).

imv a shame the 71 album was a patchy effort, not that it stopped dalton being US top fave with new bohemians, and gay women, in particular, from 2000s on, in the recent posthumous revival of dalton's work.

at a stretch, perhaps it made listeners feel 'sultry'? (because of dalton's earthing effect)

(same as jazz artists) typically, the french have overdubbed the best utube short docu on her ....(and i really love her fridge)! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2oRJy...eature=related

i would love to hear this (recently re-issued) karen dalton album, if it is on spotty jc? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/It%27s_...e_You_the_Best
