    quality gold medal winning performances...

thanks for the reminder to la it.

although i have mosquito bites on my calves. a lovely summer evening outside last night, and i did listen to verity but was amongst friends, and there's nothing like listening on your own.

verity was cooking up a great mix... in the background.

In the tradition of impartiality should point out that other radio shows are available. But generally bronze medal level or less.

And that Repel stuff works against most tiny biters or, as a change, try Skin So Soft from Avon which mysteriously works. Apart from the Hebrides where they'll queue up to bite through your clothes...

Verity in totally cracking form last night. Such skill her team have in researching and editing, matched by her so, so welcome down beat presentation style.

I went back to have another listen to Wednesday's LJ. Introduced as being a little later than normal and then though on LA they started the show five minutes in even though the programmme was obviously recorded (no Maxy here). Why not just stick the whole recorded progamme on? Will we ever hear that five minutes - did Verity tell us something we needed to know, or did she waste her time on it - I assume we will never know. Och, I should just be grateful for LA and get on but it's difficult when it looks just like November out there.

There is a simple way to hear the messages hidden in those missing 5 minutes.
1 make a helmet out of silver foil & don it
2 gently insert a red bic biro in each ear
3 raise RIGHT leg off the ground
4 double right-click on the play button
5 blink both eyes as fast as poss
Start hopping - you should be able to hear the missing bits
If it still doesn't work , there are a few more options to try (did I mention the cold porridge?)

Thanks Global - the porridge did it, though I had to stick a sprig of heather in it....can't believe Verity said that on the Beeb.

                    Success!

I don't think anything has worked as well for me since I heard that Britney Spears is an anagram for Presbyterians.

Last night's 45 mins worked well for me too - From the beginning...the feeling of self-indulgence with two tracks from Jenna Reid,
the lyrics of the Natalie Merchant track intended for a child but quite delightful, reminding me of a collaboration between Roald Dahl & H.H. Munro.
A celebration of the kingdom where the horse is king (dedicated to the reasonable Houyhnhnm's obviously),
a memory of Music Planet - I remember us enjoying that Tuva throat music at the time, although I don't remember that track.
...there was more - an especial mention for Robert Jarvis, I know Loch Neagh, so that was poignant. It is suffering environmentally nowadays.
There's a link to the Natalie Merchant song though - it used to be full of eels. Perhaps the giant is slumbering nearby? I wouldn't be surprised.

My age is three hundred and seventy-two.
I think, with the deepest regret,
how I used to pick up and voraciously chew
the dear little boys that I met.

I've eaten them raw, in their holiday suits,
                      eaten them curried with rice.
I've eaten them baked, in their jackets and boots,
                      and found them exceedingly nice.

But now that my jaws are too weak for such fare,
                      I think it's exceedingly rude
to do such a thing, when I'm quite well aware,
little boys do not like being chewed.

Little boys do not like being chewed.

So I contentedly live upon eels,
and try to do nothing amiss,
I pass all the time I can spare for my meals
                      in innocent slumber like this.

                      Innocent slumber like this.

                      (More eels my lady?
                      Perhaps some bubble and squeak,
or a little toad in the hole?
                      A Lynconshire hot pot, perhaps?
                      That would be nice.)

And so now I contentedly live upon eels,
and try to do nothing amiss,
I pass all the time I can spare for my meals
                      in innocent slumber like this.

                      Innocent slumber like this.

Can we just assume the comment 'it was good but too short' applies to all LJ & Wo3 programmes currently please?

                          Global - Loch Neigh?

I thought the playlist for last nights LJ looked good but the meteorological conditions had steamrollered my head. I crashed out for hours but will try to listen to it for the first time on Listen Again. Should that be a name change?

First to the small matter of sawing down a tree with a blunt implement. Really dreading this! Potentially it could crash through the kitchen of a B list celebrity and he has more than enough controversial news stories to keep him going already.

I'm sure he'd rather be talked about than not talked about, Lat - of course you could try:

I like that cartoon and am in mourning about The Dandy.

Still, there's some good news. Those Malawi Mouse Boys are racing up the charts:

Malawi Mouse Boys, Ian Brennan, Tinariwen, IRL, Independent Records Ltd, Sunday Times, Cerys Matters, Bob Harris, Whispering Bob, The Shed, Mark Coles Music, Late Junction, Max Reindhart

John - It was a complete and utter failure. Wobbled about on the top of the ladder trying two rubbish saws and could only cut about a fiftieth of the way in. The trunk is thicker than I thought so I am going to have to pay for a doctor. Bad karma!

However, I have managed to remove the top of about 50 innocuous looking plants created by the squirrels. That is how this one started and it will be a full time job as it is quite impossible in each case to get to the roots.

While in the front garden, my ex next door neighbour appeared - he often appears - and slagged off the current owner to me. A tricky situation as harmony is nice and his comments were very audible. I wouldn't mind so much but old neighbour's girlfriend is current neighbour's cousin. Still, at least it wasn't Jordan - The Comeback which would have taken it onto a different level.

(And if you think you've worked it out from the clues, answers strictly by phone only!)

(Clue : Nothing to do with Prefab Sprout)

I'm amazed the Dandy lasted so long, Lat - it's been rubbish for ages - have to say I was a lot sadder when the Beezer went. I'm afraid the Beano may not be long behind - end of an era, but perhaps inevitable - the weekly comic has pretty much gone, I think.

I had a great two and a half hours last night listening to a very good doc about Nusrat on R2 - AK was in there too - and then that very excellent 90 mins of VS - a really enjoyable show - BBC radio is great when it's good.
