I think the sultry description may have come from Dylan describing her as "funky, lanky and sultry" , handsome - imagine he wasn't necessarily talking about her voice. That album's on Spotty, - http://open.spotify.com/album/1vtmM8YLRiQxjcg5KDOM1R - seems like it was recorded pretty much in a day in single takes - seems she didn't trust the studio, which would back your comments.

I liked this article about her which appeared in the grauny about 5 years ago written by Laura Barton.
Bob Dylan was a big fan, like most of those who heard the late, great vocalist. Now, 14 years after her death, Karen Dalton's time has come. By Laura Barton.

(imo) a shame the other kd album's not that brilliantly put together either: vocals too loud, her picking too quiet, and some ejut playing elaborate lead guitar fills where possible. 'tie me a ribbon bow' isn't even the same song at all ......thanks for the listen though jc .... right i'll get my horse, dog, children, partner, and shurrup now (with a huge bottle of cheap scotch, hic).

So maybe that's the reason she isn't as well known as she should be.

Just KD and her 12-string here handsome, and sounding very good, but looking nervous - wonder why they start the film in a scrapyard.

Spent a couple of days haunted by Tum Tum Mañanita by Atahualpa Yupanqui since Verity opened Thursday's LJ with it - spellbinding!
Verity Sharp's selection includes Sevara Nazarkhan and the Futunan String Band.

Yes I like it John. I will probably listen to all of that edition as the selections look pretty strong overall.

(.........That Johnny Parry track is good)

(Unfortunately the track listings people have added a "C" to the beginning of Halkias's name)

as a rule of thumb i suspect kd fans really treasure that film footage of kd playing her 12 string in a kitchen john corrigan! it's the real kd, not the disorientating/ed audio jumble evident on her 1971 lp.

unfortunately, i never did get chance to respond to the post quoted above. though i had researched it unusually thoroughly too .... at least looked up the studio where the 71 album was recorded, which was very interesting in deed. (a bit too interesting in fact, and i got side tracked completely by the history of 'bearville studio', in particular todd rungren co founding bearsville in 69, later unable to record his own hits there himself if todd couldn't hack it, what chance did kd have in 71, in comparison)? i may go back, find my original links to remind myself what i was about to post in response to your suggestion: So maybe that's the reason she isn't as well known as she should be.

perhaps it's not just kd's failure to overcome immense problems at 'bearsville' as the sole barrier per se - but seemingly everything was stacked against kd...including the combined weight of both elvis and marlon brando! so, all said and done quite a heap....

even though (pre decline), kd was strong and resolute as well as talented - there are some things you just can't budge.

currently, i have also been haunted by a track posted by paul sherratt about a horse moving in 'ever decreasing circles'. i think kd would recognise that sensation. she may also have experienced trying to retrieve her fave old leather jacket, having accidentally left it at betty's gaff.

unfortunately, it seems time itself was against kd too.

incidentally, i have very much enjoyed verity, and fiona lately - in fact, they are very top of my beeb class list, up there with no nonsense steve hewlett (no less), and crime writer p d james (then 93 yrs) when she set about the beeb dg. does anyone else remember that interview?

(also, thanks v much for that margaret atwood obit jc posted, on lateralthinking1's ray bradbury thread ...where is mr electro now? might he hopefully join 'the world music forum', and is global truth able to supply us with a current picture of mr electro at all)?

Thanks handsome - by the way, here's Mr B talking about Mr Electrico - amazing - he reminds me of Brian Wilson in this clip.
Ray Bradbury talks about a childhood encounter with carnival-folk.

what a story teller bradbury was!

though i suspect he borrowed the picture of mr electRICO's travelling troupe from global truth's personal archive collection of pics!

Actually it is exactly the reverse...
... here is my favourite chapter by Ray Bradbury, from the book Something Wicked This Way Comes which had an undue effect on me at the age of 12 when I read it...

                      I think it's Chapter 14:

'Nothing else much happened for the rest of the night'
If you remember it, and you remember the previous chapter you'll understand the impact....

Actually it is exactly the reverse... somehow thought as much globaltruth i miss your pointy head people drawings....aren't they a bit ray bradbury?

i don't like the sound of what happened to miss foley later on mind you ....before her disappearance. evidently, there are so many levels to read bradbury...but total disappearance isn't a good sign, not least as you don't get to know any more of whoever's missing.....

Mr. Dark is the Illustrated Man, covered in tattoos, and he pays attention only to Jim, who is enthralled by what he sees. Mr. Dark tells them to come back the next day and the boys run off but then hide and wait. What they see is unbelievable. Mr. Cooger rides backwards on the carousel (while the music plays backwards), and when he steps off of it, he is twelve years old.

and that's exactly what happened first to the dg, and then the entire staff, and trust at the beeb. ever since they have all been stuck at 12 yrs of age! the illustrated man has a jumble of beeb staff portraits tatooed in minature all over his skin..... inside and out.

i can't wait for the carnival to return, they'll all spin in the other direction, become 100 yrs old, a return to reithian standards of excellence at long last!

                        there is hope afterall.

one of my all time faves...and not a million miles from ray bradbury themes ..round about 1.18.40 you can see beeb staff at their agm party:

thanks for that globaltruth, as mentioned in the comments below the article, perhaps 'not what rb might have wanted' as he apparently didn't actually like computers that much............. ? he preferred his type writer ...they are rather charismatic mind you http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ug-eN...eature=related and very private in comparison....(until the point of publication of course)!

Only 45 minutes of Verity last night on LJ, but capped off a most enjoyable week of listening. I'm celebrating that the work's server has suddenly started allowing LA without so much as a by-your-leave.

...by the way I would heartily recomment the Ray Fisher track from last night's show, Bonny Birdy....took me a minute to get into it, but it was well worth it.

I was also planning to resurrect this thread - still catching up, so still anticipating last night; her shows are invariably quality gold medal winning performances...
