Keep out walkers by telling Inverness that they could be eaten alive if mega-wealth can't be secured. I would need to check but I don't see much criticism of that aspect of Scotland in Scottish culture. It is generally spun off in historical references towards and against the posh English so that, for example, Dick Gaughan will still be complaining about Lord Robens rather than questioning any current laird. I would be happy to be provided with examples in music of where this isn't the case.

Yes, thank you, JC. I like her. She is very good on globalisation (King of Birds), women (Songs of Separation) and more. Here, it is the environment and I am completely in agreement with her political position (while being supportive of golf courses in most other places). The proviso is that it is anti an American - ie Trump, albeit he is one with Scottish ancestry - rather than a critique of anyone or any class who/that is actually Scottish. I wouldn't suggest that Scotland in this respect is anything other than typical. Elsewhere in the world, there are opposition movements within countries in regard to economic inequality. Occasionally there is revolution. Sometimes at life's grimmest that is triggered by various forms of genocide with reference to ethnicity or religion as well as well as poverty. A strong sense of nationalism, even where boundaries are redrawn, remains intact although it can become fragmented.

In England, there is on the cultural fringes an internal economic class based critique that is closely linked to a wish to redefine nationalism, not least because the definition of nationalism is so weak. This is where other countries misinterpret. There was no arrogance as the Croatians and Scottish media suggested about the England football team being seen as having an easier route to the final. The entire thinking was based in an acceptance that success was rare, expectations were low and achievement could be ruled out on other routes. Nor as some in the Irish press said of the celebrations is English nationalism, quote, "toxic". Britain on occasion bombs. England does not. England football fans may on occasion go on the rampage but in any excess they are almost uniquely apolitical in international terms. Mostly it is a party that gets out of hand owing to the loose attachment with nationhood in other ways.

I am not even convinced that the England football team reinforces a national identity in the way that the football teams of Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Croatia, France, Russia, Peru, Brazil and Argentina do. When it does well, it merely tentatively suggests that some sort of national coherence could be possible. The moment lasts a few days and then nationality is again forgotten. This is epitomised by the fact that even I don't hear the Copper Family and swathes of folk culture as soon as Dier is successful in a penalty shoot-out so I am sure it is true of everyone else. "Three Lions" shows the depth or lack of it - it's only back to '66 via '96 - so it is just that England happens to be where I was/we were born. There are no equivalents to the England football team so far as I am aware for royal events - weddings etc - which are also an appearance of a coming together are all about notions of Britain and Britishness.

For what it is worth, my own red lines for the granting of any further referenda on independence - in Scotland, Wales etc - are (a) a noticeable cultural shift in those countries which indicates a clear understanding at street level of distinctions between England and Britain (b) an accompanying welcoming of England establishing a clearer national identity with the English showing more signs that they can find one and (c) a sense that all the home countries would work and build on a sense of special relationship rather than hoping to diminish it.

Thank you very much JC - and that is a very good choice. Yes - they have achieved as much as could have reasonably been expected. I do not expect them to win today but 4th place is still good as per 1990. I will probably be going out for a meal in the next couple of hours and so sadly am not too sure what of today's sport I will be able to watch when it is broadcast.
