They were very unfortunate weren't they really, John, and I share your sadness about no African team going through. It would have been worse in my humble opinion had an Asian team not got through instead. Personally, I don't see Africa making a breakthrough and it has long been mooted until Europe lifts it up in whichever way. It would be more appealing than the money making leanings towards the USA and China but it has to be done in a way that doesn't compromise integrity. One likes what one likes musically but mainly I feel it is the African countries that are leaving which have the best to offer. Not surprising as WM was onto Africa early. Senegal, I think. above Nigeria but I will need to look at it properly.
Back to the footie after a whole day off - Into the last 16 and this afternoon the tasty treat of France v Argentina. Lots of people want to see Messi remain in the tournament though he has never convinced me when I've seen him play in the blue and white - always looks like a Spanish player who's ended up in the wrong team. Anyway, one of these biggies is going home - neither has convinced so far, but I'm going to have a wee bit melancholy French this morning.

Wonder what the Catalonians think about the Spanish footie team's chances against the Russians? - anywhere here's the Catalonian anthem 'Qualsevol nit pot sortir el sol' by Jaume Sisa
With Brazil already through today, the Japanese are going to be hoping they can join them on tomorrow's back pages and not be arriving home masked and anonymous.

Wow! They certainly will not be going home anonymous - great 45 minutes of football, just past at the post by the Belgians. Would have done credit to this famous Belgian adventurer.

I am so far behind on my international farewells now, I don't know if I am ever going to catch up!
