Not the easiest of musical beginnings is it.

If only Iran was the sublime end of Iraq:

    Ilham Al-Madfai - Baghdad - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3umIPH8RYiM

I will try and dig out something more suitable.

Just as a footnote to the point about national anthems, I found that when I was searching for new interesting classical composers by country on Naxos, they kept leading me down the wrong path. It seems especially in smaller countries that composers of national anthems are composers of little other than the national anthems. I'm not sure what to deduce from this.

The Spanish have troubles , and a local derby to contend with.

This sort of thing should help them chill out.

Love a bit of this sort of stuff every couple of years, although the Italians do it best, I think. So where are they when you really need them ?

Doubt if I will watch many matches, but now I can use my chart to pick listening material...good idea, that.

I believe she is based in New York. I love a bit of fado, JC. Mostly I prefer Ana Moura to Mariza although I chop and change depending on what they are performing. That track is very good. I feel that I should have an all time favourite fado singer but I don't. History and an admiration for classicism suggest it should be Amália Rodrigues. Thinking outside the box always makes me turn in this area to Yasmin Levy who isn't quite in the same category, not least for not being Portuguese, but does, as you know, a range of not dissimilar things.

              Spain:

Thank you teamsaint for your posting.

We should have plenty of further time for Spanish posts and changes of manager or will we?

These are perhaps to Mano Negra/Manu Chao what the Saw Doctors were/are to the Pogues - ie not as sophisticated - but as with the SDs I have found them really great fun live:

That first half was very good so here's my offering today from Portugal. My two favourite spots on the Iberian peninsula are (a) Valencia and the nearby coast, fairly undeveloped and (b) either side of their border, the north of Portugal and the north west of Spain both of which are very celtic culturally and environmentally. Here is a bit of the Portuguese side of (b):

Peru kicks off its campaign versus the Danes today. Time for a spot of Peruvian psychedelic cumbia, I'd say.

I'm for Iceland as it is a small country which hasn't been there before and Argentina as it is my prediction for winning the tournament. But it is a very tough group in which any team could go through. I thought I would pick out today a couple of the experimental artists we know and provide clips of them in a live setting. Hard to believe how many years ago though:

Picking up on where we are to date:

I think this good but slightly "in the bedroom" effort is from Morocco:
