    World Music World Cup

This string might disappear without trace, but some folks out there may be aware that there's a footie tournament starting today and I thought it might be an opportunity to travel musically to a few of the less visited spots, and some that we go to regularly using the game/games of the day as a guide. Senegal and Colombia are in there, but so are South Korea and Panama. Today kicks off with hosts, Russia, facing the might of Saudi Arabia.
Here' a favourite Russian piece of mine from one of Charlie Gillett's compilations: Geo by Ivan Kupala.

I would suggest a "best national anthem" competition but I'm worried Germany will win that as well.

As Columbia seem to be making their presence felt out there, a bit of Toto La Momposina would go down well.
I’ll leave an expert like JC to choose a track though...

Here they are, pretty much when they came to the attention of the West via Real World Records..cracking track.

Totó La Momposina came to Real World Studios in August 1991 to begin recording what would prove to be her most important album, now re-released on Real World...

This thread is a v. good idea JC, now we just need to set Lat off to come up with one of his all-inclusive lists...I'll just sit back and wait with open ears...

Thanks for correcting my “typing on phone on train typo / spelling mistake.”
              Great contribution.

A very good idea for a thread, JC.

Saudi Arabia doesn't do a lot of music but perhaps with the new cinemas that will change.

This duet is from one of its few pop star albums recorded in 2017:

                  Rabeh Saqer & Angham - Asaab Jarh - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVz5nlPIHCM

I am not aware of an official England song this year.

According to Keith Allen there is no money in it.

The home countries have had memorable official songs and at least one great one in World in Motion. There have also been some very well chosen pieces here as television themes. But the official world cup song - ie the one for all countries - is generally as forgotten as it is awful. So hopefully this thread will be an antidote to those, including this "it doesn't work" song:

                    Daryl Hall - Gloryland - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFBTwvvM7M4

Away from the official, I like these football songs, among others:

Pop Will Eat Itself - Touched By The Hand Of Cicciolina - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNWu7Ejm_TM
                    Stevie Wonder - Another Star - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9KKBvWTdMQ
                    Thiago Thomé - Brazil Brazil - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jx4z2sTgrQ
Hamish the Goalie (M Marra - here by the Bevvy Sisters) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3c-toC3574
                    Black Grape - England's Irie - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNqqEi6oGbo
                    Mano Negra - Santa Maradona - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJi0BAdK0Nw
                    San Jose (R Argent/A Lloyd Webber) - Argentine Melody - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfS_UYal5mw

For the boring moments in the next month of coverage, you might like to try my favourite of the radio quizzes I have recently heard.

Name all 18 players with a Z in their first or second name who have played in a team that won the Premier League.

Only because there is no Team UK and God Save the Queen is not specific to England - I am not aware of a specifically English national anthem, although Land of Hope and Glory is used at the Commonwealth Games when England wins a gold medal.

A fair few decades ago, and before he was wealthy, Billy Bragg was pushing for it to be Jerusalem on the grounds that it was conceivably left wingish.

And, yes, he even recorded it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EXEqFMFFsQo

As oft discussed, Show of Hands's "Roots" which was part hijacked by the far right illustrated the "Born in the USA" style misinterpretation dilemma:

                        Show of Hands - Roots - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5h4PFBuzvw

Perhaps it is only in sport where nationalism can be released in full glory unabashed. Otherwise, it is often better done at a somewhat oblique angle.

See: some years back, there was a memorable television moment when Jonathan Meades walked dramatically into the distance to the strains of this:

                        Pierre Bachelet - Les Corons - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXARMIQdIpM

After the host's trouncing of the Saudis today, tomorrow we've got Uruguay and Egypt facing off, followed by Morocco v Iran in St Petersburg, and then Portugal/Spain in Sochi.

Hard to resist a spot of Uruguayan storytelling...no idea what's going on here, but I love the sound of it.

Whats the word for enjoying something even though you have no idea what its about ?

                            Excellent that, JC.

Any road up, Morocco ( did I spell that right ) join the party tomorrow.
Here’s one of my favourite Moroccan musicians.

                            Malika Zarra .

Or, to be brutally honest, one I googled just now, but she sounds pretty cool to me .
                            I might buy an album.
