I know she used to be the First Lady of France, and she sounded pleasant enough, but is that a good enough reason that we had to put up with Carla Bruni's stuff taking up a disproportionate amount of limited World Music time on a Saturday afternoon.

Other solo acoustic musicians are available. Examples:
My Bowed Psaltery Psolo of this French Bourree tune showing off how the bow can slide across the top of strings and the rail pins without getting snagged or ...
Cyril Tawney would have been 90 years old today. A great proponent of traditional song and a wonderful songwriter, here's Daragh with a version of his glorio...
I loved this track, but, again, not sure why it was included
Ah well, should be Lopa's week off next week.

Instead of bland, saccharine Carla Bruni Lopa could have chosen
Brigitte Fontaine.
I mean with lyrics like
I lost my glasses
It's gonna be a party
The soldiers are gone
Covered in confetti
Time is a boat
The earth is a cake
I will be v disapointed if we do not have at least 1 Brigitte Fontaine expert on the forum

Much Improved this week...enjoyed the Road trip to Uruguay with Betto Arcas and the classic artist of the week, Ali Akbar Khan, who I was unaware of...very enjoyable for a Saturday afternoon. Really liked the ethio-jazz RockDub (can't think what other pigeonhole to put it in) from Azmari. Much better blab/music coefficient, I should add.Last edited by johncorrigan; 10-01-21, 12:29. Reason: coefficien is probably the wrong word, but you know what I mean.

no Music Planet on Sat. so caught up with LK's previous attempt.
The road trip to the Chinese province of Guizhou with musicologist Mu Qian was intriguing.
I like the stuttering repetitive singing - how and why has that developed over the years?
Here are the Yandong Grand Singers in a jolly compilation from a tour of the US from pre-pandemic times:

Some very fine tunes on 'Music Planet' yesterday, especially the creole opener by Sakili from Rodrigues, an island in the Indian Ocean. Also really enjoyed the final track by the guest, Chinese pipa player, Cheng Yu - 'Little Stream'. Lopa still sounds like she's reading from an auto-cue...I suppose that's not likely to change anytime in the near future.

Classic artist of the week on Saturday's 'Music Planet' was Algerian maestro, El Anka Hadj M'hamed El Anka and I just love that voice of his - quite wonderful. This is 'Lehmam' and he's accompanied by one of the stranger group of instrumentalists I have seen - wonderful music.

There you go...that wasn't so difficult, was it!? All you need to make a decent programme is the nice and informative Mr Banning Eyre, some delightful Mande guitar, Dr Duran being baptised by Mister Perry, and a few fine tunes ...sadly, from my point of view anyway, Spiers and Boden have reformed.

LK was totally out of her depth with Banning, but he is a competent presenter, passionate about his subject as well as being an active player so could just talk past her clichéd rhetoric.
He deserves his own show - oh, wait, https://afropop.org/
How great to hear Dr. D too.
