On KT's MP at the weekend the inaugural Global Encounters session between two musicians working remotely. This one was rabab player Qais Essar, an Afghani based in Arizona working alongside Korean Dasom Baek who plays various ancient Korean flutes, for example the Daegeum and Sogeum. It did sound very experimental - very pleasant sounds - I suppose this is fairly common now, especially since lockdown, for musicians to meet in the ether. Personally, I found it interesting rather than great, but will await to see what collaborations appear in the future.

They have been doing this on Late Junction for ages - I think it is one of the reasons I don't bother with LJ so much - these collabs often feel a bit forced and the results are commensurate with that.
What makes me smile is that the presenter always has to give an exaggerated version of the excellence of the results. I would love once to hear them say that the results were so bad they were going to spare the ears of the faithful listener.

It was a harpish weekend with Cerys having French/Mongolian Celine Dessberg and her Mongolian Harp in the studio on 6 - quite a bit influence from Dorothy Ashby there. But even better, on BBC Radio 3's 'Music Planet' KT had Angharad Jenkins celebrate St David's Day by choosing three tracks featuring the Welsh Triple Harp and very wonderful they were, I thought. Tracks by Nansi Richards,
Llio Rhydderch, and finally Cerys Hafana accompanying herself singing. Very informative and very beautiful.

KT had a spring special on Saturday's 'Music Planet'. There were a few delights in the programme, including a song by Marzieh from Iran, probably recorded in the fifties, and a terrific Raga performed by Hariprasad Chaurasia.

KT said, there's been a good few songs written and performed about the sound of the cuckoo. She played 'Cuckoo Song' by the Baltic sisters, and here they are performing it live in a forest up in Northern Europe, I assume. Haunting.

Did Cosmo Sheldrake's cuckoo song get a play? Here is a live version...

A few years since I've heard one. Used to be a regular visitor in these parts - even got to see her a couple of times about her cuckoo business.

First time I ever heard that tune, JR, was when I bought the first Jethro Tull LP when I was still at school - still my favourite of their records. My introduction to Roland Kirk whom I saw shortly afterwards late one Friday night on the BBC.

Los Pirañas' 'Bogata in Three Tracks' on KT's 'Music Planet' on Saturday was very enjoyable if a bit short. However my favourite pieces were Pakistan's Muslim Shaggan and a song from Sweden, I think, by Maija Kauhanen which reminded me of a great Swedish/ Senegalese record that Mr Globaltruth posted some years ago called 'Fra Senegal Til Setesdal' which still gets a regular outing in the JC household. Anyway, here is Maija Kauhanen performing 'Vaskilintu'.
