Sadly the listings omit the first track - I'll have to go back and listen again to Listen Again.

For some reason I kept expecting Ivor Cutler to pop up, but if he did I missed him.

All in all the whole show was pretty average. I very much liked the first track - or track zero as perhaps it should be known....
and Caoimhe Uí Fhlatharta & Séamus Uí are real up and coming superstars as JC & Padraig rightly point out.
Gruts (sic) is to be congratulated on his efforts. There was little difference between his most favouritest track and the others.

I'm not a huge fan of pure synth but Heinali playing in a bomb shelter in Ukraine might be worthy of consideration by both World Planet and LJ...
The patch is loosely based on the XII century polyphonic organa of the Notre-Dame school and earlier medieval polyphony. It is the foundation of his new album Organa he couldn't finish due to the war.

Here's the one they missed from the playlist, Global. It's from the new release of Ali Farka Toure material, this track featuring the mighty Oumou Sangaré. - 'Cherie'
'Voyageur' is out now on CD, LP or digital: http://worldcircuit.lnk.to/AFTVoyageurA beautiful new and previously unheard track from the great Malian guitaris...

Just listening in to the bomb shelter sounds - defo LJ material

Thanks JC - that was the stand out track of the whole episode for me...without even knowing who was playing

Occasionally I feel a bit ashamed that I have not heard of the 'Classic Artist of the Week' on Music Planet. So it was this week with Malian singer Bako Gangon. What a wonderful voice. KT said there is a film about her and her family, made by Lucy Duran and I have found the link to it...I'll have a watch later today.
This film won in 2016 the AHRC Anniversary Award for the "best AHRC/AHRB-funded film since 1998" Description of film: On 7 July 2015, Mali lost one of…

Saying that, there were some fine voices on the show this week including an Algerian opera singer, Amel Brahim-Djelloul.
I also loved the voice of special guest, Lucas Santana. I could have listened to him talk all day - it was so great to hear the way he was using English, and also his music. Really enjoyable show.

Just caught up with KT's 'MP' from Saturday past - a selection of tracks from the Songlines Awards. Also included was 'Classic Artist of the Week', Togo's Bella Bellow whom Angelique Kidjo talked about in last week's show. Angelique said that Bellow had been a major influence on her - she had even written a song in celebration of her. Bella Bellow was killed in a car accident in the late 60s just on the brink of breaking through.
Listen without limits, with BBC Sounds. Catch the latest music tracks, discover binge-worthy podcasts, or listen to radio shows – all whenever you want

Looking forward to next week when KT presents a session from the excellent Scottish small pipes player, Brìghde Chaimbeul.

Yes, I liked the sound of Brìghde Chaimbeul; I'm always a bit conflicted about Songlines and their awards - they were solely responsible for the downfall of froots magazine, the passion of Ian Anderson (not that one). It was very much a labour of love, and a shame to see it go.
Ian still produces a podcast, or podwireless as he calls it. He also still performs music live.
                His show:

I may have posted a link to his show before - I may have said all the above before...but slightly differently, so, just in case you're suffering from deja froots vu combined with ennui, here is a picture of a great cover celebrating 40 years:

Thanks for the reminder. There's so much stuff out there, I forget to look in at 'fRoots', Global. I used to order 'Songlines' from my newsagent, but I got a bit fed up with it so I cancelled. Mind you, it was through them that I originally heard of the Kershaw podcast. He describes 'Songlines' as the media partner of 'AK plays some Bloody Great Records' for which he gets a free ad in every issue, and from my memory it is a reasonably-sized ad. Andy often mentions Ian Anderson and has done so down through the years. 'fRoots' seems like a one-man operation...must listen in to a podcast some time.

I fair enjoyed the piping chat between Kathryn and Brigdhe on Saturday's 'Music Planet'. Also enjoyed her playing very much. Must try to catch her live sometime. Really enjoyable show.

KT was quite coy about featuring another piper I thought - someone should tell her that it is probably the first time this has happened - and they were both great.
By the way, pipers are pretty good in the bird world too...
Here are a couple, first the English one, then a juvenile American one..

I was pleased that you didn't drone on and on about it, Global.
By the way, Brigdhe's new record 'Carry Them With Us' is available on Spotify.

...and very well worth a delve in, in my opinion.

Was listening to it this very morning along with the new Lankum album.

By the way, with my county library card I am eligible for free digital subs* to a whole host of mags so...i actually subscribe to Songlines.
It is often quite tedious but both Brighdhe and Lankum get a mention, along with a good article about Tinariwen. Also, from next month, Eliza Carthy will have her own column.

New Yorker magazine (now I'm showing off) regularly mentions some music I wouldn't otherwise know about - they even reviewed a friend of mine in Sheffield who is in a long established band.
He was surprised too - made no difference to sales or listens apparently.

                          * Just checked and the service is only available in England and Wales - shame

I particularly enjoyed the first couple of tracks on the KT/ Sekou Keita Music Planet yesterday afternoon. They were doing the old musical ping-pong and Seckou played a track by his uncle that he was playing on, and in reply KT played a piece by her Dad that she was on. Great stuff. Very enjoyable show. He's a very pleasant guest that Seckou.

This was enjoyable throughout and I too enjoyed Seckou's response to KT's Dad's piece. "Why, it's like griot" - yep, parallel cultures.

Musical ping-pong is a hoary old technique but who cares?

KT was back on the Music Planet decks yesterday. It was a bit all over the place...I suppose it should be, mind you. However studio guests, Estonian duo Puuluup, were a right pair of comedians and I loved the final track they played, which was something about birch trees. They were playing the traditional bowed lyre or talharpa, but with a fair bit looping going on. Kathryn also had 'Les Troubadours du Roi Baudouin' as classic artists and their renowned 'Missa Luba'.
Kathryn Tickell with the latest new releases and a live session from Estonian duo Puuluup.
