Its going on on BBC TV, and other BBC Stations. This is all my supposition (but then, its not like the BBC ever disloses this sort of matter...... Anyone who knows from the inside is welcome to confirm or correct.....
Some programmes can't be straight repeated - "language would offend modern day audiences". Also, it can make the material sufficiently interesting (not to keen followers iike here) to the audience.
To some extent the reason is there is an interruption in the supply because makers haven't been able to get out and travel or have guests into the studio. (For me, there is already enough poor quality zoom interactions in programmes post March 2020). On the other hand, its a way of cutting costs and if some of the programmes in the series cost a lot more, these selections from the [ast programmes balance out with a lower cost.
Thinking about it, its been part of the way 4 extra has worked for years - 3 hour programmes on Saturday mornings (not that I listen - I just check the schedules....)... and others on Radio 4.
(TV has been re-running Parkinson interviews...)
While I agree with much of what you say, CS, it wouldn't take much to turn up and play a dozen records with a world music theme - I mean, they don't miss an episode of Jazz Record Requests and just run a repeat on R3. If they're struggling, then ask people to send in requests, and spin a few tunes. Music Planet, however, has no interactions with its listeners and never has had. To my memory WM on R3 hasn't had any interaction with the listener since Mary Ann left; and I certainly wouldn't expect any from Lopa. I like Kathryn Tickell - she's done a good job since she came in - but Music Planet is a pretty clunky vehicle at the moment, and has been for a while.
There'll be a fair bit content for Irish Fridays for the next wee while after today's visit to KT's Music Planet from Ian Lynch of Lankum talking about his Anthology of Irish Music: 'Fire Draw Near'. If the three tracks that were played are anything to go by it is well worth looking out for when released next month. Fine show today (and it's not even finished yet).
I enjoyed listening to the very combative Ian Brennan on Kathryn Tickell's 'Music Planet' yesterday talking about some of the African roads less travelled in World Music circles including South Sudan, Rwanda and the Comoros islands. He sounded like a guy who could easily get his dander up. He played songs from his field recordings among others and talked about a book he's released on a Manifesto for music in 59 notes...intriguing. KT managed to stay well clear of a dust-up.

Only 2 days left to listen to this - one of the best editions of Music Planet all year in my humble opinion.
I liked it so much I bought his book - didn't find him combative at all, maybe because that's I agreed with much of what he said..and was pleasantly surprised by his views, sadly under amplified in the media.
Also - what a great job KT did of the interview; I hope that doesn't sound patronising, but nowadays it's a bit of a surprise to hear a good interview of this sort.

I'm interested to hear what you think of Ian Brennan's book, GT. KT has a good way interviewing, in my opinion, letting the interviewee get on with things, as she did with Brennan. On Saturday's show, I thought she did a fine job with the assured Iranian/Israeli singer Liraz. I had read a bit about her and was very impressed by her performance on the show. A fascinating tale in these times about how you might draw on a heritage that is a mixture of Persian and Jewish history, using musicians in both countries, often secretly. Very interesting and enjoyable with KT on fine form.

Hasn't Liraz been on before with her previous album?
A story that bears repeating though.
Totally agree with comments on KT - calm and smart.
Really excited about this afternoon's Music Planet on BBC Radio 3 as Kathryn is celebrating the Yorkshire Carolling Tradition with singer Fay Hield. Love it!

Great radio from the Royal Hotel in Dungworth this afternoon.
KT was at Pacific Quay in Glasgow for yesterday's 'Music Planet'. I really enjoyed the live acts - Ellie Beaton was singing in Scots language and I particularly enjoyed 'Baltic Street' set in the main road that runs through Montrose. I thought that Danish trio Stundom were great - very interesting and enjoyable Nordic folk music. Good show.
Top show from KT today with a tribute to Norma, and a tribute to Lata Mangeshkar on the show - some great Arabic tunes, and some Mariachi, among a few others. Really enjoyable hour - could have handled another hour of it.

You're right JC - that hour absolutely flew by.
I was at that gig in 2017. Hull City of Culture year. We went to a lot of events in 'Ull that year this one was special...
A lovely choice by KT demonstrating her good taste and empathy.
Enjoyed the tune from Ye Vagabonds - might try to catch them in Glasgow in a couple of weeks. Loved the classic artist of the week, Vinicius De Moraes, and that crackin' samba track with Odette Lara. Interesting sounds from Northern Ethiopia too. Kept me entertained and interested for an hour while I tried to avoid the Buddies' football score.
