Really enjoyed hearing live guests Madagascar's Toko Telo and particularly delighted to hear D'Gary, but it was so very enjoyable. Great to hear the Songlines' Awards - in general there would be concurrence with a few of those...Trio Da Kali and Rhiannon Giddens spring to mind and GT will appreciate the award to Eliza and her Big Band. There was an interesting-ish Israeli road trip and to 'balance' it next week there's a Palestinian road trip. I like KT - she's an enthusiastic presenter.

Following her excellent road trip round three of Africa's musical powerhouses, Rita Ray took us on a tour of new music in Ghana last night on KT's Music Planet, and very enjoyable it was. I enjoyed this one particularly, even with the voice changer thingy.

Really good edition of Music Planet last week, just got round to listening - particularly the interview with and performances from Purbayan Chatterjee.
The mixtape wasn’t to my taste and the road trip to Greenland a bit predictable but Kathryn Tickell was v good throughout.

Great to hear the live recording of Saz'iso sing their wonderful folk music from South Albania last night. Their song 'Tana' is still one of the best things I've heard this last couple of years.
And KT had Democratic Republic of the Congo's Tabu Ley Rochereau as classic artist of the week and with Dr Nico on guitar on 'Ohambe' it was a top notch moment.Comment

I enjoyed the trip to Paraguay too, Global...liked the sound of the guide. The Paraguayan harp has to be one of the great sounds in world music. Found the general level of the music played of a high level, and enjoyed it throughout.
As regards the Paraguayan Road Trip, got me thinking as to what is World Music. I guess it has to be music for "the people"; if the intellectual component is too high, it morphs into Classical music, or a higher grade of Jazz, appealing to a narrower population segment.Comment

Over the years I have come to enjoy a bit of fado on the musical menu and last night's performer, Claudia Aurora, was no exception. However, I find it very difficult to distinguish Claudia from other female fado singers. I was a bit less interested in the Nova Scotian road trip and I haven't got to Don Letts' mixtape yet. Highlight of the evening so far for me was pipa player Wu Man with Son de San Diego's on 'El Balajú', on the subject of which, next week's guest is Baloji.
In the meantime, here's a spot of Wu Man and Son de San Diego - not a great recording, but hope you get the idea.

Claudia Aurora is quite a new name to me so I will listen to it with interest. On fado, I may well have been along this road before but I don't really have a number one singer. I suppose historically it is Amalia Rodrigues and later Dulce Pontes. Obviously Mariza and Ana Moura are pretty good. Pretty pleasant Music Planet listening to it today at work, so I wasn't concentrating too hard. This choice from the mixtape did make me sit up and take notice - from Burundi by Anon, 'Akazéhé par Deux Jeunes Filles' had me wondering if Laurie Anderson had heard it at some point.

An ok Music Planet - Tartit livened up proceedings and Jackie Oates was worth listening too, a very honest musician.
The road trip worthy but dull, perhaps because the segment presenter (N. Demetriou) specialised in monotony...
Still rather listen to KT than LK though - simply for the quality of her interviews, musical knowledge and genuine enthusiasm.Comment
