Well, many thanks for that, f f; and yourself.

Are you saying that you can see a connection between the two songs at some level? Hey! You should go on Essential Classics for that Playlist spot at 9.30.

It would be against my principles to put me in a Radio 3 programme . But it does make me think - on what basis would I plan an hour's programme of music. Definitely, I would start off with a single basic idea, something that could be investigated. Then I would dig out a certain number of works, some well-known, some unfamiliar, which contributed something to The Big Idea. In an hour, no more than 6 different works would be necessary, because I would want to explain exactly how … NOOO! DON'T SWITCH OFF!!!
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I think that sounds great, f f. The hard part is 'explaining how' works relate to 'the big idea' - and there was a 'break in transmission' just as you were getting to that.
Of course, as a listener I would expect to hear different points of view and approaches in that format. For example, I would be very interested to hear 'the idea' driving 'the explanations' given by a presenter who loved and included various kinds of music. We already have something like that, but without the rigour you indicate.

Interesting, because I think what people might 'talk' about could depend on whether they were a performer, composer, academic musicologist or just from a general cultural point of view (me). What I'm less sure about is whether, were you to remove all the 'talk', you would then have an interesting mixtape, or whether it would be a bit 'samey'. I don't know. And maybe that would be appealing to some people but not 'clashy' enough for others. Back to what people want from a mixtape.

Thanks john. As often with this programme this particular one probably lies somewhat outside this World Music board, and so I'll probably give it a listen!

My favourite Jim O'Rourke piece is "Women of the World" - it's a wonderfully hypnotic blast of freshness - although I don't wholly agree with the sentiment as I believe in equality:

A moving paean to female empowerment, “Women Of The World” was originally written and recorded by the legendary Scots poet, singer and raconteur Ivor Cutler with Linda Hirst in 1983. However “Women Of The World” is most closely associated with alt-rock scion Jim O’Rourke, who extended Cutler’s rousing folk ditty into a 9-minute epic of shimmering beauty for 1999 album Eureka.

Is it formally a musical "round"?

I would say that it was in that general area.

Late Junction - midnight tonight (26 April)

                          12.00 Late Junction
A mixtape from the mind of Japanese composer, guitarist, turntablist and producer Otomo Yoshihide.

A Late Junction mixtape from Japanese composer and multi-instrumentalist Otomo Yoshihide.

This follows on from another programme of Japanese electronica. Otomo is a great friend of, and contributer to improvised music in this country: this should be well worth tuning in for.

Very enjoyable indeed, even if I did get caught out a couple of times by the extremes of volume, S_A.

I have yet to hear this. Normally the BBC's habit of compressing everything to an undifferentiated mezzoforte circumvents that sort of occurrence!

No idea who was doing the LJ mixtape with Max tonight but very enjoyable it was though I'm pretty sure that I myself wouldn't have chosen any of the tracks(except Joanna Newsome maybe)...I suppose that's what I like about it, now that I don't think about it.
