Global, what about rebooting the quiet corner as Roots and Branch, or am I barking up the wrong tree?

This would have to be approved by the Good and the Mighty; may take a while. Lot of form filling, committee meetings into the night, sucking of teeth, careful lobbying via high quality chocolate biscuits, possibly cake (fruit); you know the sort of thing.
Then a vote, that long wait for the final decision as bundles of music manuscript are set alight using a taper borrowed from Dr Lucy (she has them made specially from imported yak render, give off quite an exotic parfum). Is the smoke white? Black? or a dirty grey? No-one is quite sure.
Eventually, we MAY get a decision.
But the expense, the stress. Could we stand it?
I still favour a never-ending series of forum wide referenda, with a variety of results and everyone choosing the one they prefer.
Meanwhile the name remains exactly the same.

Wait, could we have a Country and Western version? Boots and Ranch?

Come off it, Global, you know I'm retired now . Could be quite different under the new management.

In the immortal words of those fine classicists, The Who:

I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
          Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
          We don't get fooled again
          Don't get fooled again
          No, no!

          Meet the new boss
          Same as the old boss

He's a right rogue, that Globaltruth? Not sure what he's been on this weekend...surfeit of chocolate, I expect. Anyway ff, re future programmes, I believe the terminology is 'If you don't want to know, look away now'.

                SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER

                April 13th 11pm - 1 am

Malian singer Fatoumata Diawara is in session with Kathryn Tickell for Radio 3's new world music show.

Fatoumata Diawara is one of the younger voices that has recently emerged from Mali, one of Africa's most musically-rich countries. She has now settled in France, but regularly performs back in Mali as well as across the rest of the world.

Also on the programme, singer and BBC Radio 6 music presenter Cerys Matthews presents a mix-tape of two selected African artists - Senegalese singer Mar Seck and Malian kora player Ballaké Sissoko.

                April 20th 11pm - 1 am

Haitian singer Mélissa Laveaux is in session with Lopa Kothari for Radio 3’s new world music programme, Music Planet, which brings us the best roots-based music from across the globe.

Mélissa Laveaux explores her Haitian heritage, re-working songs sung in Haiti during the American military occupation of the early 20th century, presented here in an intimate solo setting.

Seriously, thanks ff - useful .. these shows appear at first glance as if they have simply been lightly tweaked.
                  Will wait and listen.

My feelings too, GT. I thought we were going to be getting road trips - I've got my bus pass at the ready! Happy Easter, by the way!

Interested to know whether the tweaks are significant improvements (and if not significant and/or improvements, why not?)

Incidentally, if you want to keep a week or two ahead go to the Media Centre webpage, tab Programme Information, search Radio and Radio 3, and select the week (the latest dates apparently on offer won't yet have been filled). And GO. They don't list all programmes, but so far have listed the first three weeks of Music Planet.

It may get more enterprising as it beds in.

Will definitely give the new shows a listen...

Yes, I do look there, it has been dormant (wrt to this topic) for so long that I gave up...

I gave up on the new programme halfway through - a real dog's breakfast full of the latest gimmicks - "mix tape", "road trip" etc. No sense of shape to it at all, probably due to the absence of a live presenter. I'm already missing World On 3, with its simpler but more satisfying format.

I really enjoyed Eliades Ochoa, pilamenon, but the fakey interview with him was so embarrassing. The 'Road Trip' was interesting enough but hardly a 'Road Trip' really, just a clip from 'From our own Correspondent'. Essentially my problem remains that Lopa Kothari continues to sound like an automaton, so I don't mind somebody coming in to break things up a bit. I didn't quite get to the end...got fed up with the autocue.

I'm fighting with my inner demons here, trying not to write that disgraceful comment about
                              'lipstick on a pig'
there, I've given way... it is a bit harsh (but not that harsh)

Fundamental problems still apply so far on the strength of this show, adding a couple of 'trendy' (is there such a thing any more? I quite hope not) twiddly bits doesn't actually address those.

I wouldn't mind if the whole show was done in the Road Trip style but a different guest presenter every week (JC's "Foreign Correspondent"), who was allowed to play WHOLE tracks instead of soundbites and/or be edited so as to talk over intros/outros.

I'm currently towards the end of the first hour. Hope Masike's speaking voice is delightful but the volume setting of it seems low. I don't think a higher volume would have impeded enjoyment of the music with appropriate editing and fading. I think we are getting a decent flavour of Zimbabwe here in the music selected. Key artists. The vibe. Also, the political bits and pieces are informative. Still, I am biased with Shumba. I know it so well but it has such a quality it will always surprise and it gets into the blood with each hearing. In my humble opinion, one of the best ten world music tracks of all time.

Of course, to have both Zimbabwe and Cuba in the first programme makes perfect sense. Chan Chan is always a fine opener and the giant that is Eliades Ochoa was an apt guest. They could have given more information on key points rather than glimpses. I have had to Google certain references, eg The La Linea festival which is also featuring Orchestra Baobab and Jorge Drexler. Details of Thomas Mapfumo's concert in Harare later in April. And I would have liked to have heard what has happened to Chiwoniso's daughter, Chengeto Brown who was intending in 2015 to help take forward the mbira tradition.

                                More shortly.
