Who remembers that great release Opika Pende: Africa at 78RPM (2013, Dust-to-Digital) which demonstrated so well the musical heterogeneity of the early African recording industry?
The person behind this was Jonathan Ward, and, for this effort he received a Grammy nomination in the category of Best Historical Album. Think he was beaten by a Beach Boy or a Dylan....However, since 2007, his ongoing hobby project has been the blog Excavated Shellac where he posts mp3 transfers. Just click on the menu to see the extensive list of excavated music he covers. Usually there is a photo of the label and information about the style, musician(s) and origin. Where possible he contacts native speakers to ensure his understanding is as complete as possible.
Here's the link, i can only recommend you explore and hope that you do. Perhaps if you find any treasures you could post them on this thread?
Long may he continue.
